Jul 4, 2011 - No Such Place as Margaree

This weeks adventure takes us to Dunvegan, Cape Breton at the MacLeod's Beach Campsite. It was about a 2 hour drive. As my daughter is not the best traveler, as in 'are we there yet?', she doesn't use that term. She says, 'how many more MINUTES'. She knows how her Dad 'loves' hearing this every few minutes, she now plays a game (between her and I). She will say, what number is showing on the dice (hanging from the rear view mirror) and I will say about 45! We also used our GPS on this trip. Wicked awesome toy! She actually knew where we...

Jul 15, 2009 - Pilot Whales

We walk down to the beach. Last nights’ wind has changed direction completely and is now blowing straight on to the beach which is making it very cold. We find shelter in the sand dunes and then bask in the heat haze from the hot sand. After popping into town for some supplies we head down to the towns “supervised beach”. Here there is a cafe on the front and we eat our food on the beach. As we are sitting there we spot some pilot whales out to sea. They don’t come in very close as the waters here are quite shallow. We head back to the...

Oct 2, 2006 - Margaree River Cape Breton, NS

Late 29 Sep 2006, Don, Mike, Al and Bob arrived on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, specifically in the Margaree River area, after a 17 hour drive. Began Salmon fishing on 1 Oct. It was a great fishing trip -- fishing and a lot of laughs. Catching was a bit of a challenge. Mike was top rod with three landed (2 Salmon & 1 Brookie); Al landed the biggest Salmon; Bob lost a Salmon and landed a small Brookie; Don on was challenged by a bad back that restricted his fishing. We returned safely to Plattsburgh NY on the evening of 8 Oct. While Bob...

476 km today. Travel day from Pictou to the Baddeck Cabot Trail Campground. Britt and Ken enjoyed the afternoon in the salt water pool. Sylvia, Barry, Therese and Denis did part of the Ceilidh Trail on the West part of the island. A tour of varied sites with a stop at the Glenora single malt scotch distillery-tasted mighty fine by the fire.

Jun 24, 2006 - Saturday

Saturday 62406 Into everyone's life, chance plants an off day. Today was our turn to get one. First, we awoke to extreme fog. Visibility only about 200 yards. We waited as long as we could but had to tough it out and drive to the Ferry at Wood Island. It was about 60 miles of nothing to see but a white line to the right and one or two yellow ones to the left. When we arrived at the Ferry, we could not see the loading ramp even though we were at the front of our row. Finally, car lights appeared out of the fog and the ship was being...

Aug 31, 2005 - Lower Barney's River to Whycogomagh - 150 km

Well, it was fairly windy and drizzly but not the monsoon we had feared overnight. Leigh and I packed up a nevertheless damp tent and hit the road unaccompanied. I requested that we take it easy today and it was Leigh's pleasure. We purposely dawdled up hills, keeping our heart rates squarely in the aerobic zone to stave off the possibility of even more lactic acid in our thighs. The road was quiet and smooth, and we pedaled alongside each other, having rare conversation about the future at home...we need more space, should we move out of...

Aug 4, 2005 - Baddeck, Cape Bretton, NS

August 4, 2005 (Thursday) We drove into the town of Baddeck to look around. We had a wonderful pizza for lunch at a restaurant called "The Yellow Cello." Next we visited the Alexander Graham Bell museum (see photos) and took some photos of us on the grounds. The museum offered an excellent presentation of Bell's life and work. We took pictures of Bras d'Or Lakes from the grounds of the museum. We stopped and purchased tickets for the "Spirit of the Island" show tonight. Upon arrival back to the bus for dinner, we met Pete from Oregon who...

Jul 7, 2005 - Cape Breton Highlands National Park

A cool overcast morning, fog hanging low. Driving south to Ingonish Beach, it seems everything here is a copy of Scotland. A golf course called Highland Links, a hotel named Keltic, the green hugging the hills, fog overall. I take a short hike and then move to the Middle Head hiking trail. There are quite a few people around and that makes it better. It's a good hike. I'm sweating pretty soon, taking off an outer layer. Close to noon, I continue north on the Cabot Trail which goes around the perimeter of the park, stopping frequently for...
