Today we took a side trip up to Fort Liard in the Northwest Territories. We just couldn’t get this close and not go there. Besides, I was hoping to get another spoon for my collection (I told my great-nephew Dallas I’d be getting 2 more this trip). But alas, there were no souvenir spoons to be found in Ft. Liard. Stayed in another great provincial park. The scenery was awesome when we arrived – a mountain with a beautiful green lake below. Retired at Last!

Aug 4, 2011 - Northwest Territories

We did indeed head up to Northwest Territories this morning. I’ll say right up front that we were underwhelmed. This is how it went. From our campground in Fort Nelson, we drove back along the Alaska Highway about 15 miles to the intersection with Liard Highway. This is sometimes called the Liard Trail and that’s what is on the road sign at the junction. It is possible to make this a longer adventure to Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories, and some Alaska travelers do that. From Grande Prairie, Dawson Creek, or somewhere...

Scratchin' the Itch

May 24, 2008 - The Northwest Territories

Just a day trip and we can't even touch the tip of this huge area but then there are not many roads into or around in it so we head north to Fort Liard. Fort Liard is a First Nations community(the local tribe is the Acho Dene) and they are famous for their fantastic work in birchbark baskets with Porcupine quills. They still make most of their tourism dollars on these and other hand crafted items sold at the Acho Dene Native Crafts and visitors center.
