Jul 18, 2015 - Terra Nova National Park

Terra Nova (Latin for "New Land") National Park is the most easterly of the National Parks of Canada. It is similar to many National Parks and State Parks in the United States, in that it protects forest lands. It has several campgrounds, including one for RVs where I'm staying. It also has walking trails, picnic areas, and a visitor's center. Another similarity is the excellent ranger-lead programs. I try to attend these programs whenever possible. One night, they held their first-ever “Dark Skies” presentation. Volunteers from the RASC...

Jul 25, 2012 - Terra Nova National Park

Got an early start this morning. Left Rocky Harbour KOA at 7:45. Stopped for gas about 9 o'clock. 261 litres @ 1.32 for $345.00. Ouch! Pulled into Newman Sound Campground in Terra Nova National Park at 2:00. 456 kms for the day. It was another 5 hour 'white knuckle drive' with the high winds all day. The spectacular scenery more than made up for it though.

Sep 6, 2010 - Happy Laundry (Labour) Day

Happy Labour Day! Especially to all you moms whose children go back to school tomorrow. Although in the case of Kim and Kris it means that they have to go back to work. Kim is still at Westmount and Kris will be at Margaret Avenue. The show last night was very interesting. All local talent. Most could play their instruments fairly well but only a few could sing. They all sang but only a few were better than OK. Still it was a fun evening. Went on for 2 ½ hours with a 20 minute intermission. They do some kind of show almost every weekend...

Sep 5, 2010 - Country Music Night

What a wild night! At about 3:00 AM the wind started to blow very, very hard. So much that the trailer was shaking. Both Marilyn and I were up. It was obvious that we were feeling the effects of hurricane Earl. The wind blew the BBQ over and blew our mats into the woods. Thank goodness I had put the awning up last evening. We survived although it was a bit unnerving. We were scheduled to do the hike /boat trip this morning but the cancelled the boat trip due to high winds. We hiked instead after lunch. Didn't do much else today. Cleaned a...

Sep 4, 2010 - Touring the Area

We decided to get a feel for the area this morning so we drove to the Visitor Centre to see what it was all about. Nice. Displays of sea creatures, etc. Signed up for a boat trip tomorrow. We will hike the Coast Trail for 2-3 km and then the boat will pick us up and take us back to the Visitor Centre. Into Gloverton to get some groceries and then to Eastport. Stopped at Rosie's Bakery and Restaurant for lunch. Very good. Cod Gratin for Marilyn and Turkey Soup and Saltfish Cakes for me. Checked out the summer theatre and found out they were...

Sep 3, 2010 - Terra Nova

Dropped Chris in Bonavista. What a pleasant surprise he turned out to be. Great guy. We certainly enjoyed his company the last while. We went towards the Trans Canada Highway (TCH) through a series of small villages. All on the ocean. Once we hit the TCH it was an easy drive to Terra Nova. Registered, found our site (too small), phoned the gate house, they gave us a new site, drove back to do the paperwork and ............ The attendant we had spoken to was in the process of giving our new site to other people. Wouldn't change her mind....

Aug 11, 2010 - Eastport, NL - Shriner's RV Park

It was a short 53 mile drive today under overcast skies but we managed to avoid the rain that was coming sporadically. We drove past the RV park on the first try since they had changed their name and the web site I found them on hadn't been changed. Since they were the only park in the area, Doris called them and sure 'nuff we had to backtrack but were only delayed about 10 minutes. We have 30 amp full hookup with so-so WiFi and decent cell coverage. There is one channel, almost, on the antenna - I sure miss my satellite!!! After getting...

Sep 5, 2008 - Bonavista to Terra Nova National Park

We had a fairly quiet day yesterday; groomed dogs, worked on my first Retirement Planning course assignment and went for supper in Elliston at Nanny Hayley’s again. We both had pan-fried cod and blueberry puff for desert. Delicious! Today we drove to the Terra Nova National Park where we set up camp in the Newman Sound campground. It turned out to be a beautiful day even though it started out a little damp and windy. There aren’t very many people in the campground so we had our choice of sites. We picked one which has potential to get the...

Aug 30, 2008 - Terra Nova

Another name for Newfoundland - and a National Park - Saturday, August 30 The French, who just have to be different about everything, call Newfoundland, Terre Neuve - and so it goes. The Newfoundlanders had this big, scenic area they’d set aside for a national park and it needed a name. Gros Morne was already taken, another concession to the French, so they decided to name this one in the same spirit but put their own spin on it. So Terra Nova it is - and whatever you call it, it’s another stunner. Not as immediately spectacular as Gros...
