Oct 28, 2016 - Leaving Newfoundland

. Three weeks in Newfoundland visiting relatives, and it was time to catch the ferry back to Nova Scotia. Getting a reservation during the summer months can be tricky, sometimes you need a week or two in advance, but this time of year, not a problem. A call to Marine Atlantic, they already had our information in the computer from our trip over, a credit card, and we were all set. . But first, we had to say farewell to all the relatives, and I knew the "Minnesota Goodbye" was about to kick-in. Hazel and I had a late lunch with cousin Patsy...

Sep 4, 2016 - Newfoundland

Sept 3 Our ferry ride, the MV Highlander took 7 hrs and was a smooth sailing journey. It was new since 2012, had comfortable chairs which reclined , and several TV's with a variety of shows playing. Good thing someone recommended ear buds , Frank was content and even had a few power snoozes. It really did make the sailing fast. I enjoyed reading my book, walking out and about too. There was sunshine, some wind and rain along the way, and when we arrived into NFLD ,the temperature was 16 degrees and sunny. No wifi last night as we stayed in...

Aug 26, 2016 - Port au Basque

We arrived at Wreckhouse with paved parking. The winds were very calm at 6 pm, we hiked aroundand enjoyed the evening. Watch some DVDs About midnight the winds were howling!! We had 90 kmh wind!!! The ocean winds are more dense, I awould assume because of the humidity RV'ers should not stay in this area, there have been numerous truckers have flipped over along the highway. And now, on to Port au Basque I met a Quebec'er who hates his New Winnebago Navion, he had a list of things to rant about, we almost missed the ferry, haha.

Jul 30, 2016 - going to the ROCK

July 29-30 - North Sydney We booked an RV site to meet up with the Brits(Roy & Lynn) and be ready tomorrow for the Ferry. Filled up propane at Canadian Tire then check-in for the Ferry, next stop Port aux Basque, Newfoundland. We stayed at J.T. Cheeseman campground. July 31 -Port au Basque It was a "peaceful easy feeling", as we drove to Rose Blanch and grab dinner at Shore restaurant in Marguree'. We stopped and hiked into a water fall, pretty impressive, as there were a few people picking Partridge & Bake-apple berries, both a NFLD...

Jun 29, 2015 - Port aux Basques, Newfoundland - June 2015

Crossing to Newfoundland was easy and relaxing. I rarely have the time to read a book during the day. It is usually my late evening delight before going to sleep. But, on this almost 8 hour journey, I got to sit back in a very comfortable chair, with a spectacular view of the ocean. Although it was raining, the seas were not too bad. Finding the first RV park in the gloom and rain was not fun. I had planned to stop at the visitors center, pick up some maps and get directions to the campground. We were told by ferry personnel that the...

Aug 19, 2013 - Louisbourgh, Nova Scotia

Yesterday morning at 0845 the entire caravan lined up and drove to the ferry terminal at Port aux Basques, Newfoundland for our six hour ferry ride to North Sydney, Nova Scotia. It was 24 miles to the terminal and we arrived around 0930 where we lined up to get our boarding passes and pass through am Agricultural Inspection. Nova Scotia does not want any soil, root crops, potatoes, or live plants from Newfoundland. The inspection was very brief and consisted of a few questions and an inspector sticking his head in through the door and...

Newfoundland 2013

Jun 18, 2013 - Ferry to Newfoundland

On Tuesday we took the ferry to Newfoundland. It was a smooth crossing. Although it is a six hour ride we left our campground about 9:00 am and arrived at the next campground in Newfoundland about 7:00pm. Trip stayed in the RV for the crossing and seemed to do fine. We stayed about 30 miles from the ferry at the Grand Codroy RV Park. We are now on Newfie time which is 1 and 1/2 hours ahead of EST.

Sep 14, 2012 - Day 61 - Ferry to Newfoundland

Ferry Day!!! We drove to North Sydney in about an hour, starting out in fog and rain that cleared off quickly. We boarded the ferry as two vehicles to save ourselves some money (about $100) and made our way to the lounge to get a table to play cards on. The ferry was not full so we had no problem getting space to play. The whole sail, about 6 hours, was clear, sunny and smooth. It was hard to believe that the ocean could be so calm. We came off the ferry and drove about half an hour north to Little Paradise Campground for the first night in...

The Wandering Nunns

Sep 1, 2012 - Saint John - Blues and Jazz Festival at Vitos

Now this was a great night indeed! It started at 4:00 and we were there at 4:00. We got V.I.P. seating (table of 8) and it wasn't long before we were joined by some of the local fans. Needless to say that they made our night. I have forgotten all of their names but they were good people for sure. We closed the joint!

Aug 24, 2012 - Port Aux Basques

Friday, August 24, 2012 – Port aux Basques – Farewell Newfoundland We have visited mountainous highlands and plateaus, hilly areas and bogs, coastal lowlands, and heavily forested areas to the ocean and the steep cliffs. This province is a mix of Alaska, Montana, Minnesota, Utah, and New Mexico. It is beautiful and we recommend others to come and visit. Who knows, you may want to stay. The weather cooperated during our travels - cool and very little rain. We will be in Nova Scotia next. Stay tuned for more travels and Happy Trails and...

2012 travel

Aug 13, 2012 - Trapped by rain

Since Monday was a rainy day, we stayed in Port aux Basque, slept late, had a leisurely breakfast, and worked on the blog. We wanted to do laundry but had to fight with the hotel people because housekeeping was using the washer and dryer. You can’t say you have a guest laundry, then tell people they can’t use it because HOUSEKEEPING is using it. Since Glenda was late getting laundry done, we didn’t get to go to a granite lighthouse down the coast that we want to see when the rain stopped. We rode back up to the ? Center for more advice,...

Aug 12, 2012 - Ferry from Sydney to Newfoundland

The ferry crossing from North Sydney was actually pleasant. There was a guy singing Newfoundland songs in the bar/lounge, a snack bar, fairly comfortable lounge chairs and I barely had time for a nap. It was only about 5 hours actually, but they wanted us there 2 hours early. We didn't really need that long because motorcycles go to the front of the line, then we spent an hour talking to the other bikers, some from Canada, a couple returning home to Newfoundland, and one from Louisiana that had a bumper sticker on his bike that...
