We’re past the halfway mark – closer to Europe than America now. We arrive early Sunday morning. Each night, when we go to bed we advance the clock by an hour, so we’re four hours ahead of you now, running on twenty-three hour days. Like living on a planet with a different solar cycle, I guess. You get into bed and suddenly realize it’s eleven thirty, not ten thirty. A little bit tiring, but nothing like the jet lag of a flight. We’re up to our ears in food. We’re out in the middle of the North Atlantic. Two miles of water beneath us, they say. A pretty amazing experience to walk around with glasses of juice on this small (compared to the sea) metal platform and know there’s nothing but cold water for hundreds of miles in all directions. We’ve had two obligatory “formal” nights – the guys in tuxes and me in my one long black dress (bought for the trip because I had no such thing). An archaic custom but people seem to get into it.
