Aug 14, 2012 - Twillingate to Elliston, NFLD
Tuesday, August 14, 2012 We drove Hwy 430 to 433 to Hwy 1 (TCH) and we are now in Elliston, NFLD, the root cellar capital of the world. This is where several people told us to see the puffins and whales. Others were not so lucky and paid high prices and saw nothing or very few animals. We stopped at Terra Nova National Park on the way to Elliston. Two little boys kept picking up and showing Vicki the sea life in the “touch” tank. They told her to eat the scallops raw because they are much better and showed her the eyes of the scallop. The...

8/10 – 8/11 Another 33 miles (PH230, PH238) brought us to the Elliston Municipal Park just outside of Elliston. For about half of the trip there was a Jeep following us. When we got to the campground we found out why – it was Pete and Ceil following us to say hello. Pete and Cecil also have an Alpine RV. We met them at the Alpine factory in Yakama, Washington in 2006. Elliston is known for having over 130 root cellars which explains why they are known as the Root Cellar Capital of the World. Elliston is also known for their puffin site....

The sun is out this morning. Returned to watch the Ellistion puffins (2500!!), very close viewing of their antics from shore. Saw more root cellars. Drove to Bona Vista lighthouse. Whales were seen this morning, but they didn’t cooperate for us. Ron went through the Ryan Premises National Historic Site – well worth while, history of cod fishing in Newfoundland. Drove PH 235 back to PH 230 and stopped near a closed wildlife interpretation center and outdoor hockey rink at Lethbridge. Saw a moose wander by and noticed that some furry animal...

Dumped and filled with water at Lumsden municipal facility. Followed PH 330 / PH 320, stopped at Gambo for a while, found wifi and checked e-mail. Got on the TCH. Stopped at the Tera Nova National Park Visitor Center and looked around outside. It has rained really hard earlier and then rained hard again. Turned on PH 233 at Port Blandford and drove to PH 230 toward Bona Vista. Turned on PH 239 to Trinity. It was 4:30 and the historic buildings close at 5:30, so we just looked around and read signs. Drove back to PH 230 and up, turned on PH...

Aug 14, 2006 - Elliston
Today we visited the small village of Elliston. Our first stop was at the small local museum which told the history of the village and also the place to pick up a tour of the local root cellars in the area. Over 130 root cellars dot the landscape, constructed with the most basic of tools, some have been there for more than 165 years. They were built before the days of electricity to preserve vegetables through the long winters and to keep items cool in the summer. We visited a number of the cellars which even on a hot day were really...
