It rained overnight but was sunny & calm this morning. I had to pack up & drive to Hecla Village which is about 5 km from the campground & was a bit annoyed that the neither the museum or the interpretive centre were open but there was a good self-guiding trail with information signs on the important buildings. Hecla Island & a strip of land along the west shore of Lake Winnipeg almost to Winnipeg Beach was established by the Canadian Government as the Republic of New Iceland in 1875. Jun 2, 2017 - Wasagaming to Hecla Island

I got my wish this morning – I saw 2 bears from the safety of the motorhome. One was running along the side of the road & the other one was eating something beside the road. I also saw a deer which crossed in front of me & had to slow down a couple of times for families of Canada Geese herding their babies. The road north through the national park was beautiful. It was another nice day, the road had been recently resurfaced & the new leaves on the trees contrasted very attractively with the darker evergreen conifers. There wasn’t much...
