May 30, 2017 - Souris to Brandon

Just a short drive of about 65 km north to Brandon which is the 2nd largest city in Manitoba, after Winnipeg. I stopped off at their Riverside Discovery Centre which is also the Visitors’ Centre & got a bucket-load of stuff about Manitoba & Ontario which is my next Province. After talking to the ladies there I think I’ve changed my plans & will head further north. It depends on what campgrounds are available next weekend because the weather is forecast to be warm & sunny. Apart from that, it was a maintenance day. I filled up with petrol at...

Canada 2017

May 30, 2016 - Manitoba

It was a great travel day. Sun shinning & temps topped at 29C. We arrived at Turtle Crossing Campground in the Grand Valley by the Assiniboine River. This town’s future was doomed by two disastrous river floods, in 1881 and 1882,then again in 2012 which just about destroyed this campground. The weather reports called for an approaching storm & sure enough, by nightfall it was pouring & very windy.

May 29, 2016 - Canada

We got off to an early start this morning. Headed up 281 into Canada. We stopped at the Peace Garden but didn't go in since we have been there before plus it was $15 to get in. We fought a west wind all the way up to the border. We were detained at the border while 2 agents went through every nook and cranny inside and outside of the motor home. Plus the Tracker. After more than an hour they let us proceed. I have a theory why we were searched. We continued north to Brandon, Manitoba for the night. All the stores closed at 6. The Internet...

Nov 8, 2015 - Day 0 - Up to Nov8/15

So we are in Brandon, visiting family before heading south for the winter. It has been a time of changing of plans this year. We were planning to leave Fort McMurray right after Thanksgiving, come to Brandon for a couple of weeks, head to Niagara region to wait for winter to catch us, then head south. Our first amendment happened when Amanda had a wedding to attend in Calgary over Thanksgiving so was not home, so we decided to head to Edmonton the next weekend, get a braking system for the towed vehicle installed and see Amanda before...

Jul 14, 2015 - Day 7

Early start at 6:30 am. Not much in Brandon, Regina or Moose Jaw. Stopped for fuel and I gave clerk 20 dollar US for $1.90 coffee. Got back 20 dollar Canadian and 10 cents in change! (20 US= 22 Canadian) Stopped at Walmart in Regina. Hot dog buns only packaged as 12/bag (hot dogs same 8/bag). No beer/wine at Walmart. Lunch in camper in Moose Jaw at service station parking lot. Dropped back toward US on Canada 45 out of Swift Current. After Cadillac, rough road and rain made going tough. Border patrol made us give up limes and lemons even...

Apr 25, 2015 - Leaving Saskatchewan

So once again I ask, are we still in Saskatchewan? How can it take 5 days to cross this straight line province? Oh, I remember, an extra day to tour the Tunnels of Moose Jaw and we partied with a friend in Lampman. Well after having sun all day yesterday this morning we woke up to an overcast cool sky. We said good bye to our dear friend and rolled eastward once again along the backroads of the Wheat Province. You can tell things out here move along at a steady slow pace. Talk with anyone and them most probably will tell you that's 2 MILES...

Winter West

Apr 12, 2015 - Day 246 - East to Manitoba

We decided not to bother going back into Saskatoon this morning to go to the art gallery. We knew we had a long day of driving ahead of us. It was a little cooler today but still a lovely day for driving and with the road so flat and straight we made good time. No towns of any size on this section of the Yellowhead until we got to Yorkton. We did make a couple of quick stops, though - Lanigan for a coffee and Wynyard for propane and lunch. The most interesting part of the drive was passing near the south shore of Big Quill Lake. This is a...

Apr 1, 2014 - Day 160 - Back into Canada to Brandon

We left Minot at 9:55 AM, it was 9 F but clear and calm, hoping roads are clear and dry. Went through the border with no trouble about noon, and moved into Meadowlark Campground in Brandon an our later. We spent the next couple of weeks in Brandon, some very cold nights, heater in water bay going fulltime, then made our way home once Tracy said our driveway was useable.

Aug 19, 2013 - Eatonia SK to Brandon MB

As we were short on gas last night we stayed in the municipal campsite in Eatonia SK. Eatonia really is a blip in the middle of no where, not much of anything there other that a gas pump. This morning we were at the gas station shortly after it opened at 8AM. We rode for about 45 minutes to Leader SK, where we stopped to get breakfast. Just north of leader there is a nice valley which brings a nice change to the flat Saskatchewan landscape. (see todays pictures) Saskatchewan is mostly flat, however you really can't say the scenery is...

Alaska Bound 2013

Jul 26, 2013 - A Province a Day ...

Four days beyond Okanagan Country with the pedal to the metal ... four provinces. First night in SE British Columbia, second night in Alberta, third night in Saskatchewan, fourth night in Manitoba. 1750 kilometers, almost 1100 miles in four days ... dang, no wonder I'm tired. Decision made to keep going ... no stopping to see museums, parks, you name it. But still, we have seen many new things along the way ... canola fields in bloom, the last of the mountains, a tragic rock slide, the largest truck in the world, a huge saline / salt water...

Jul 24, 2012 - Day 9 - in Brandon

We took the RV into Len's only to find out that the part received was too small so they are on the search for the correct one. They will get the TV system installed though. Garry continued to work with Margaret on the family tree and searched out all the relevant gravesites in Brandon. Had supper at Sandra & Lyle's, with Eric and Sarene and Dad. Fabulous fish. Sandra has been appointed chief chef for their portion of the trip.

The Wandering Nunns

Jul 23, 2012 - Day 8 - in Brandon

Finally got in a golf game, if you can call it that, with Dad and Murray at Glean Lea Golf Course this morning. My game was terrible, but Garry got a hint from Dad that corrected his slice. Dad had plenty of head shakes at us all. Len's RV called, part is in, so take RV in tomorrow at 11am. Garry's cousin, Margaret Platte, came out from Winnipeg to share information with Garry about the family tree. They got a lot of information copied and shared.
