June 21 Dawson Creek, named for George Mercer Dawson, a botanist, geologist, paleontologist and surveyor, grew from a sleepy little village of 600 to a bustling sprawling town of over 10,000 practically overnight. In 1930 the Northern Alberta Railways bought land in Dawson Creek to end a price dispute with a farmer. The news caused the pioneers in the outlying areas to physically move to this location, 2 miles away. The buildings were put on rolling log skids and moved to the terminus.
