Mar 8, 2013 - Napier to Tauranga

I realized last night when I went to charge my iPad that I had left my electrical adaptor in the last motel we stayed in - I was so frustrated with myself! The first thing we did after we checked out this morning was head to the centre to try and find a place where I could buy an adaptor. Luckily, we had only started looking when we came across an AA place and they had exactly what I needed; sometimes, things just work out perfectly. We didn't have breakfast this morning because Walter had a very bad night (actually, we both had a bad...

Mar 7, 2013 - Greytown to Napier

Headed out of Greytown this morning at our usual time and drove north on Highway 2, our destination being either Hastings or Napier. The highway was good, fast, straight and flat, very different from most of our drives in New Zealand so we made very good time. We made one very pleasant stop in a town called Masterton just before 10 am because I wanted to find a library for my WiFi fix and Walter needed to sort out his Visa problem. For some time now, he's had trouble with his Visa, every time he's tried to use it in a chip machine the...

Mar 6, 2013 - Picton to Greytown

Had a free continental breakfast in our hotel this morning; breakfast didn't come with our booking but we found an advert for our hotel in a tourist brochure which said when presented to the hotel we'd get the breakfast. Walter was a little reluctant because of the service we got in the restaurant last night but everything worked out fine and we had a good breakfast. After we checked about about 9 we had 4 hours to fill before we had to line up at the ferry terminal. It was a beautiful morning and we first walked all around the marina and...

Mar 5, 2013 - Nelson to Picton

It was quite a stormy night last night - I woke up a couple of times and could hear the rain and wind - so I was surprised when we woke up to sunshine this morning. It was a short drive to Picton and quite scenic, along the coast for a short while, then cross country through hills and forest and then the coast again as we got close to Picton. We arrived just before noon and stopped at the ferry terminal to pick up our e-tickets for the ferry tomorrow and then went to our hotel to find out when we could check in. I had booked online and,...

Mar 4, 2013 - Westport to Nelson

Today was a rather quiet day for us but I think we need a few of those! The drive from Westport to Nelson only took about 4 hours so we arrived in Nelson and checked into our hotel shortly after 2 this afternoon. The day started off rather overcast and it even rained for a short time but from noon on it's been a perfect summer day, really warm and very sunny. We only made one major stop on the trip and that was at New Zealand's longest swing bridge or, as we call them, suspension bridge. It was very long and went over a river but it wan't...

Mar 3, 2013 - Franz Josef to Westport

Our first of today's highlights was our hike to Franz Josef Glacier. We couldn't believe our luck when we woke up to sunshine this morning. The glacier is just north of town and we drove to the car park where the hike starts. The foot of the glacier, as far as you can go unguided, is about 3 km from the car park and the trail is excellent. The first third of the distance is through rainforest and the last two thirds is on gravel left behind by the retreating glacier. I wore jeans, socks, running shoes and my jacket mainly because of the...

Mar 2, 2013 - Arrowtown to Franz Josef

Checked out and off at our usual time, about 9 this morning. Poplar Lodge was okay but I still find sharing a bathroom a big pain; I hate having to put on my jacket or whatever to look decent to head to the toilet. Oh well, the price was right and we did have a bed. We found a really nice little bakery in town where we had coffee and a cinnamon bun, that was after we looked all over town for the bakery because we had seen it last night and then it wasn't where we thought it should be this morning. I went into a yarn shop and it turned out...

Mar 1, 2013 - Te Anau to Arrowtown

Awoke with a start this morning with the phone ringing and the alarm on my iPad blaring at 7 am. I hadn't trusted my iPad to work because I'd only used it once before so I thought I'd better get a wakeup call as backup. Both Walter and I were in a dead sleep so it took a few seconds to figure out what was happening. Consequently, we got off to the earliest start ever. We'd booked a boat trip on the Milford Sound at 11:15 and the map said it would take us 2 hours and 20 minutes to get there so we set off from Te Anau just after 7:30. The...

Feb 28, 2013 - Dunedin to Te Anau

We got off to an early start this morning, for us, checked out and on the road by 8. Walter is in "go" mode again - after all, we have a ferry to catch in five days and we're still going south! There was no taking the scenic road, either, it was Highway #1 all the way. We were heading to Invercargill and then to Bluff manly to be able to say that we drove from the top of NZ to the bottom. Bluff isn't quite the most southern point but is the place where the highway ends. It was a gorgeous hot day today, even by the ocean. Apparently, it can...

Feb 27, 2013 - Dunedin

Another epic day. We are definitely going to need a rest by the time this holiday is over! We love Dunedin if only because it's well sign-posted, the signs make sense, and we've been able to get where we want to go with no trouble at all. Our hotel is good and is very close to the centre so we don't have to use the car. And the man at the front desk gave me free WiFi today. The sun has shone both days we've been here; the wind is a mite chilly but we can deal with that. We started our morning off with a tour of the Cadbury factory. Truly,...

Feb 26, 2013 - Oamara to Dunedin

What a great day we had today. After we checked out of the honeymoon suite, we spent the next 2 1/2 hours wandering around the old Victorian part of Oamaru and had a fascinating time. Started off with our usual tea and flat white in a great little coffee shop which fueled us for the rest of the morning. Poor Walter can't drink coffee but he had a few sips of mine and felt very sorry for himself. Our bus tour guide told us last evening that the town was not doing very well financially because of drought conditions for several years. Then...

Feb 25, 2013 - Amberley to Oamaru

Began our morning by going to the public library at Amberley so I could do my journal stuff. Gotta love libraries and their free WiFi service! This library was quite new, big and bright and really comfortable. Most of the drive today down the east coast was inland although we did catch sight of the South Pacific now and again. The highway was relatively straight and the land was flat so it was not nearly as interesting as some of our drives have been. We made one major stop at a place called Timaru which sounded interesting in the book but...
