Sep 12, 2012 - Day 75

Rained all day, but we decided to drive over to Hyder, Alaska to the Fish Creek Wildlife Observation Site, about 23 miles. The site has a walkway along Fish Creek to observe bears fishing for salmon. We did not see any bears, as the water was not very clear. We did see a couple of salmon though.

Sep 10, 2012 - Day 73

We had breakfast at the Tatogga Lake RV Resort and then drove further down the Cassier Highway, BC 37, to the Stewart Highway, BC 37A, heading for Stewart, BC and Hyder, AK. It rained during the night and the morning started out overcast, developing into rain for a good portion of the drive. As we drove the weather cleared for a while but was back to light rain by the time we arrived in Stewart. We did encounter a black bear that was alongside the highway, but before anyone could grab a camera, he was off into the woods. After turning onto...

After you learn that it was everclear 150 proof. Started first full day here with pancake breakfast. Then off to see bears, on way saw this babby eagle, his head is not white yet. spawning salmon bring bears. Didn't see a lot of splashing around, it was near the end, and not many live fish left, but a whole lot of easy pickins. the bears just went around sniffing, taking...

Aug 30, 2012 - Bear River RV Park - Stewart BC

We arrived in Stewart today and had an awesome drive down a glacier lined highway to our RV park here in Stewart. The weather has stayed with us and it was partly cloudy and nice today :) The visitor's center had a nice boardwalk out over marshland we walked after lunch in town. We crossed over into Hyder, Alaska...the southernmost point of Alaska panhandle. In the afternoon we took off to watch the Salmon work their way up the Salmon River only to die by natural causes or get scarfed by bears...we did see one Black Bear! It swam across the...

Aug 18, 2012 - To Salmon Glacier

8-18 To Salmon Glacier Sunny and 58 Degrees Staying at Bear River RV Park Now that we had fuel, we headed up to Salmon Glacier today along the 13 mile extremely rough dirt and gravel Salmon Glacier Road past the bear viewing area at Fish River. Mike was less than enthused about the drive…he had enough of the strain of trying to keep us out of the holes and winding through the worst spots. But it was pretty, going along between the river and a mountain, then narrowing and going gradually up into the mountains. There were streams and...

Aug 17, 2012 - In Stewart/Hyder

8-17 In Stewart/Hyder Sunny and 54, Later 65 Degrees Stayed At Bear River RV Park The sun was in the wrong place to get really good pictures of Bear Glacier on the road into Hyder yesterday, so this morning we took a drive back up the road for photos. We got bonus pictures of a black bear on the side of the road that took off running as we came up behind him. He looked small after watching all the brown bears lately! We took pictures of a huge snow avalanche area we had seen yesterday that we couldn’t stop to see with big vehicles. Our...

Aug 16, 2012 - Dease Lake To Stewart, British Columbia

8-16 Dease Lake To Stewart, British Columbia Sunny and 53 Degrees, 2 PM Hot and Still Sunny! Stayed at Bear River RV Park We had our 4th sunny day in a row, and it certainly has made our drives pleasant. It has added a lot to the beauty of the scenery and the ease of our picture taking. We had been warned there was road construction on the stretch of the Cassiar we drove today, but we were very lucky with our timing. We seemed to hit the spots just as the pilot car was ready to leave in our direction, and we had few delays. The road was...

Aug 14, 2012 - Bear River RV Park

Stayed at Bear River RV Park in Stewart, BC for three nights in a FHU site. Once again, we especially enjoyed the free Wi-Fi while we have no cell phone or satellite TV service while in Canada. This is a recommended RV park. Note 1: We made a day trip in our SUV to the following place just north of Hyder, AK, and Stewart, BC, on Tues., 08/14/12. We drove into the U.S. at Hyder, AK (Hyder is also recognized as the easternmost town in Alaska.), then drove a few miles back into BC and high up into the mountains to the top of Salmon Glacier to...

Aug 12, 2012 - Stewart, BC

Today pretty much felt like a wasted day. A little cloudy and temperatures in the mid 50’s when I got up. I was finally able to get on the RV Park Wi-Fi and upload yesterday’s journal entry. Very, very weak signal. I was also able to log on to a GM dealer and do an online service request to have the water pump in the SUV replaced again. I let them know I have no cell phone service and limited e-mail but asked they reply by e-mail if they can complete the repair on the date requested. There is no over-the-air TV signal in this area. They...

Aug 11, 2012 - Stewart, British Columbia

Cloudy and 56 degrees this morning but no rain to start the day. I departed Dease Lake RV Park at 08:10AM on Highway 37 (Cassiar Highway) south. The road was much better than yesterday; however, it was still narrow in a lot of places and not marked for the first 74 miles. 74 miles into today’s drive the highway was finally marked and it lasted all the way to Stewart, British Columbia. There were two areas with road construction where I had to wait 10 minutes for the first and 15 minutes for the second. At the first area there was a 40KM (25...

Aug 9, 2012 - Stewart, BC / Hyder, AK

Thu, 09 Aug: Another day of driving, but it was a much shorter day than the past few. We're in a commercial RV park in Stewart, BC, at the end of the road on the Portland Canal, which it shares with Hyder, Alaska. It rained pretty much all nite and we were happy to have our second blanket as the inside temps got into the mid fifties. We awoke to the alarm clock (the sacrifices we retirees make...) and got ready to roll. There is bridge construction about 60 km south of us and the bridge is completely closed from 10AM to 10PM. We definitely...

Aug 8, 2012 - The Bears

We spent Sunday and Monday in Stewart, BC and Hyder, AK. One town runs into the next and they are both on the old side. I do have to say that Stewart looks neater and a bit newer. Hyder is old and funky. What Hyder has going for it are the bears. But before we start on the bears let me tell you about the drive to Stewart! We had been driving on the Cassier Hwy for two days when we took 37A off of the Cassier. It was another absolutely stunning drive. The road runs down through a fjord like canyon that had been formed by glaciers and the...
