Dec 6, 2009 - A little touch of Christmas at Milner House
Horatio "Ray" Milner a renowned philanthropist and business person, bought the 28 hectare (70 acre) estate at Qualicum in1937 as a retreat from his busy business life in Alberta. He began to work on the garden with his first wife, Rina. Both loved the garden and forest. Sadly, however, Rina passed away in 1952. More extensive work on the 4 hectare (10 acre) garden portion of the estate was started in 1954 after Ray’s marriage to his second wife, Veronica. Veronica named the estate "Long Distance". In her words, "We called this house this...

Nov 4, 2008 - Nanaimo, Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Combs
November 3, 2008: Because we had enjoyed our first trip down to the Harbour, we decided to do a return visit today in order to do further explore the harbour front by doing the complete walk along the boardwalk and then stopped at one of the harbour front coffee shops for some refreshments. The harbour is an interesting landscape of a wide variety of boats, small float planes coming and going and the ferries do their part to get the many passengers to where they are going. November 4, 2008: Today we headed north of Nanaimo to the towns of...

Apr 20, 2008 - Day Two of the Nanaimo AAC Trial
We were happy to see no new snow this morning, and it warmed up and melted most of the snow that fell yesterday. However, we continued with the trial indoors at the Agriplex. Midas was the first dog on the line this morning for an Advanced Snooker run. He ran his little legs off and did everything I asked of him but the buzzer went while in the last tunnel needed to qualify so he didn’t Q but I was still very happy with his run. Another highlight was the last run of the day for Gino. It was Steeplechase and I never expected he would ever be...

Nov 30, 2007 - step one off Lasqueti - Qualicum
Tired. Probably of being wired. Left Lasqueti today. Cleaned my house as I spoke to it, telling the space I'd be gone for four months but that good people would come and keep it warm and cozy. The cats were weirded out. I've been prepping them for weeks though and they knew at some point I was going to be gone. So goodbye cats, goodbye house, goodbye island of loved ones, goodbye winter, goodbye familiarity... Dreamt the other night that I was in a vehicle that wouldn't stop, I tried to pump the brakes and there was no slowing. Here I am....

Jun 15, 2007 - Burnaby to Qualicum Bay
Woke up early this morning anticipating the trip to the island. We left Burnaby Caribou RV Park on schedule around 8:00 after hooking up the car. Oops, forgot to install the Brake Buddy. Pulled into a parking lot (hoping to be able to get out again) and did the install. Back on the road at 8:15. We reserved a place on the ferry, and we have a 30 minute window to pick up the reservation. It's a rainy morning in Vancouver and it's rush hour. These drivers are nuts! We will NOT live in a big city if we move...we agree on that. Anyhow, we...

Aug 10, 2006 - Greetings from Hornby Island
Well, so far, so good! We left Bill and Sue's place 3 days ago and branched out on our own. We chose a good day to travel on the 8th because it rained all day. Despite the weather we had a great day using three ferries to get up the Sunshine(!) Coast and across to Vancouver Island. We have a BC Ferries Sail pass for 7 days and like true Scots we are trying to get our money's worth out of it. We used 2 ferries yesterday to get to Hornby Island so that makes a total of 5 ferries so far. We don't really feel that we are really on holiday until...
