May 10, 2019 - Whistler to Nanaimo

May 10, 2019 Up at 6:30 and on the road to Horseshoe Bay for the Nanaimo ferry by 7:35. Really another beautiful day with gorgeous scenery along the way. The signs going north on Hwy 99 clearly marked what exit to take to the ferry but travelling south they were not so good. We missed the exit but fortunately the turn-around was not too far down the road. We were there an 1 ½ hours early for the 10:40 departure. We were one of the first on the boat and first off. This is the third time we have taken this ferry and the first time we could...

Oct 30, 2018 - We are in Nanaimo, BC

Well we left home Friday morning and made it to Calgary about 5:00pm. Went for supper and had a nice visit with Glenda (Shelly's sister) and Brett (our son). On Saturday we went for coffee with Charlene and Paul (friends of Don's from way back). Don and Brett finished a project in Brett's kitchen which had been started when we were in Calgary in April. Spent the rest of the day watching TV which included the Rider football game, Yeah Riders on their win! We left on Sunday morning and headed to Sicamous, BC where we met our friends Don &...

Aug 7, 2018 - Nanaimo & North

I caught the 10 AM ferry to Nanaimo, in order to see more of Vancouver Island on my own. I have heard that it's beautiful and unique. Once I got off the ferry about noon, I just followed the road north and found some of the things on my list for the island. First stop was Englishman River Falls Provincial Park. It's free - no ranger around and no fee station! There is a small campground here for small vehicles and tents. The trail leads to two sets of falls and a swimming hole. I actually bathed my swollen ankles in the freezing water and...

Apr 3, 2018 - Made it to Nanaimo, BC

We left Anacoates, Washington this morning on the ferry to Sidney, BC. The ferry stopped on route because of a whale sighting, there were at least 2 which popped in and out a couple of times. I've taken the ferry many times but this is the first time I've seen whales. We arrived in Sidney and then made our way to Nanaimo where we will spend a couple of days with Marie (Don's stepmom) before making our way to Calgary to visit our son Brett. It's still cold at home so don't want to get there to quick!! Take care!

Sep 13, 2017 - Nanaimo with family

Naniamo Michael's cousin Kathleen and her husband Larry live in Naniamo. We have been there many times on our boat and we have been traveling from the ferry terminal to Vancouver since the 80s with kids, but there is nothing like seeing it through the eyes of locals. For instance we had no idea they had a Costco. That is important information for Michael. We had a delightful visit with them and Larry was a super tour guide. I also have to say the unlimited hot water, flushing toilets, electricity and wifi were also a treat. We even got to...

Aug 4, 2017 - Travel day

Happy birthday to me as we travel back down to Victoria. We have ferry reservations for Saturday back to the US but maybe we could make it today. But, after the best cinnamon roll at the cg, we made it to Nanaimo and a campground called Mountainaire Meadows. Full of kids but the only place between here and the ferry so we stopped.

Jun 30, 2016 - Clearwater - Nanaimo

A hearty breakfast and its back on the road one last time! Fuel stop in Kamloops, then over the Coquihalla. It wasn't too bad until we hit Chilliwack, then it was nuts busy, both directions.....of course the long weekend. The tailback for eastbound traffic was all the way to Langley, west bound was busy, but we were able to keep up a steady pace. Eventually made the ferry at 2:15, were told 8:15 was possible, but more likely 10:45 would be our sailing, no worries, we were there, we had the trailer, good to go!! the 3:15 came and went, we...

May 5, 2016 - Going To The Boonies

We will be leaving Nanaimo in the morning, we will be staying at a campground near Campbell River for the next few weeks. The campground is in the boonies, right on the water where the ships pass by on their way to Alaska. We will only have a few channels on their cable TV, not sure about the Wi-Fi until we arrive and check it out. Our entertainment for the next few weeks will be the whales passing by and bears, cougars and other wildlife. I will try to take my computer to town and do a few updates during the stay if the Wi-Fi is too slow....

Apr 30, 2016 - Launch Day - Nanaimo to Hedley

Early start, steady drive through the lower mainland, excellent advice from Jim and Carole about using the rest stop at Vedder, thanks guys. Hope for fuel and the first real hill challenge for the rig, slow uphill, low gear, high revs, and I think I can, paid off! A couple of sharp corners surprised me but eventually seemed to gain confidence with the down shifting and trailer brake gain for the downhill sections. We knew Jamie Davis Heavy Rescue wasn't far away but didn't feel like having to call for a heavy hauler to rescue us from the...

Apr 28, 2016 - Countdown T-2 days

Time to pack! Trailer systems checked, and zero battery power, grrr!! Trip back to Greg's RV and they gave us new batteries fully charged. These are very good guys to deal with I must say!! Truck systems checked and chequed! What to pack and where to put it, the challenges for the day were many. Slowly over the afternoon, things found their new home, little things that needed to be done, were completed. We might even have room for Elaine, Ernie and I yet!!

Apr 26, 2016 - Countdown T-4 days

Here we are and our adventure begins today 𯘩 We had no AC in our truck, just needs a top up we thought, easy fix, right? Yeah right! The AC condenser had something puncture it and was leaking, only fix is a replacement condenser, grrr, and an extra day in the shop, grrr grrr, and $900 to repair, grrr, grrr, grrr! Ah well, once the snow out east goes, we might need the AC, so fixing it is not an option. Sigh.
