Today we continued our quest for the Spirit Bear, having no luck in the morning we return to camp for lunch an some computer time. The campground offers Wi-Fi and provided me with an opportunity to get the journal posted and caught up. In the afternoon we headed north to search for bears and to explore a new area around Keynton Lake. We ended the day with a drive to Fairhaven. Another day of not seeing the Spirit Bear. We did see a black bear sow with to cubs and two bald eagles.

First thing in the morning we took a back road east about 30 miles the road was listed in one of our magazines as a prime opportunity for wildlife watching. It was a beautiful drive and we saw three deer. We made a short stop at a bakery in Smithers before heading back to Moricetown where I spent several hours watching First Nation People netting salmon below the falls. In the early afternoon we continued west to Kitwanga, BC. Where we set up camp near the Vassiare Highway. We spent the afternoon and evening searching for the illusive...

Jun 26, 2012 - Day 31-34
Day 31 - Sunny - Left campsite at Delta Junction & went to the home of Scott & Connie Plagerman. This is Jon & Pat's niece who moved here in '09. They were very gracious with their hospitality - lunch, Connie explained their farming & took us out to the field, supper & slept in their apartment. They are a real witness to how the Lord led them to Delta Junction - every step, from selling their dairy to moving to DJ. Wonderful visit for not knowing them before! Day 32-Went to church with them in the morning & heard a powerful sermon on "Our...

It rained all night and morning. Kathy decided to do laundry instead of going out to fish creek. I did see one brown bear at a distance and said my goodbyes to the other bear watchers that I have met over the years. We left Hyder at 12:00 and head to the Meziadin fish ladders. The salmon run was in full gear but there were no bears. I think this place deserves a return visit sometime in the future. We got to Kitwanga in the afternoon and set up camp. In the evening we went looking for the Spirit Bear but drew a blank. We will try in the...

Aug 4, 2011 - Kitwanga, BC - Tuesday, 2 August entry
On Tuesday morning we departed Stewart for points south. We ended up eating lunch at a neat little cafe in Kitwanga, BC. It's at the very south end of the Cassiar highway where it joins the Yellowhead Highway between Prince George and Prince Rupert. We had the best, and cheapest, restaurant meal we'd had in a long time. The young lady there made her own pies from local fruits. I had the berry pie (blueberry and blackberry), and Mary Jo had the apple. They were both great. On the way out of town we stopped to photograph a group of totem poles.

We left Mezidian Lake Provincial Park the morning of July 13 and headed south on The Cassier Highway to the town of Kitwanga where we would turn east on Trans-Canada Highway 16 heading to Houston, BC for an overnight stay. About 30 miles north of Kitwanga along a long straight section of road I noticed in the distance something struggling up the embankment to the roadway. As we got closer we saw that it was an old man, probably mid 80s, with a cane and his car was in the ditch along the road. We stopped in the middle of the highway to see...

Campground: Cassiar RV Park This park in Kitwanga BC is just a stopover park. There is a Kitwanga Fort National Historic Site where a wooden fortress and palisade once crowned the large, rounded hill here. On the trail up Battle Hill interpretive panels explain the history of the site. According to Gitwangak legend, the warrior Nekt constructed the fort and surrounding palisades in the late 1700s. Renowned for his distinctive slate and bearskin armor and "strike-only-once" club, Nekt fought to establish control of the network of lucrative...

Our route today: Northeast on Highway 37A Stewart-Hyder Access Road to Cassiar Highway. South on Cassiar Highway from mile marker 97.5 to mile marker 2.5. The last morning in Alaska, and you guessed it – steady rain pouring down as we broke camp this morning. This is after all a temperate rain forest so we should expect it, but we have had our fair share of rain. We pulled away from Camp Run-A-Muck about 10:30. The first stop was Canadian Customs. The Customs officer was a very young guy and asked the usual scripted questions and waved us...

Aug 2, 2008 - Day 57 - Stewart/Hyder to Kitwanga, BC
We got up early to go see the bears and it turned out to really be one of the great highlights of the trip. Fish Creek is part of the national park in Hyder, Alaska that built a bear viewing area which consists of an elevated board walk way where you can watch the bears in their natural habitat feeding on salmon in the local creek. There was a very large grizzly that came out to feed while we were there. She was totally oblivious to us being there watching as she paraded up and down the river pursuing her fish (The bear sequence lasted over...

Up at 6:30 but not rolling until 8:30. Another beautiful blue sky day. Drove thru a lot of brown dead trees today. A shame to see so much dead. Lots of forest fire potential on all the hillsides. Even tho we have driven this road a couple other times we don’t recognize much. We were going the other way then. Stopped for lunch next to the roaring Buckley R. in Takwa in a very pretty little park. Later we drove into Old Hazelton, a neat old town on the banks of the Stikine R. To get into the town you have to drive over a one lane suspension...

Jun 18, 2008 - Day 67 Cassiar Highway (Derrick Lake)
Day 67 Wednesday 18th June Cassiar Highway (Derrick Lake) Page 118 B3 Today we knocked over a few miles (531k) after getting an early morning start. Until mid morning the weather was overcast and showers, with the remainder of the day was fine. The morning’s drive was mainly through pine forests with some farming. At Vanderhoof, we saw a huge lumber mill with a massive pile of logs waiting to be processed plus the finished product waiting to be transported out via the rail network. Logging in this valley is big business; Vanderhoof is one...
