Aug 8, 2012 - Near Bob Quinn Lake, BC
Wed, 08 Aug: It rained off and on throughout the nite, but when we awoke the sun was shining. We breakfasted and got Carpe ready for the road. When we arrived last evening the mosquitoes were so thick we couldn't do much outside, so this morning we went through our pre-departure checklists to ensure that all was ready. At 0855 we rolled wheels and headed south on the Cassier Highway (BC 37). Driving the Cassier was a distinctly different experience than the Alaska Highway, or even most of the others we've driven up north. The road is very...

Aug 20, 2011 - Cassier Highway to Kinaskan Lake
The Cassier Highway is a 450 mile scenic route with good wildlife viewing. It provides access to Hyder, Alaska. Although not particularly hilly, there were a few 8% grades. It was mostly a good surface with no shoulders and no guard rails. We drove about 45-50 mph. There were numerous lakes along the way. The highway did improve south of Boya Lake. We stopped at Jade City. I was sad when I learned that the jewelry and carvings are fashioned overseas. South of Jade City the highway improved dramatically. About the very moment that I read...

Jul 5, 2011 - South on the Cassiar
A beautiful morning at Boya Lake. Calm water and sunshine. Temperatures during the day are around 15 C and at night around 8 C. Cool for this time of year. Even here in the Cassiar Mountains. A little slow getting going this morning and left the campground at 10:00 AM. The Cassiar is a beautiful wilderness drive through mountains, river valleys and high plateaus. Our first stop was at Jade City. Did you know that this area produces 92 % of the world's jade? It's also rich in many other minerals and there is lots of active mining in the...

Aug 15, 2010 - Kinaskan Lake Provincial Park, BC
Campground: Kinaskan Lake Provincial Park On the way south we spotted a herd of mountain goats along the side of the road. We are also noticing that the leaves are starting to turn. We stopped at the jade store to use their free wifi. Kinaskan Lake Provincial Park is also very pretty but Boya is still our favorite. The others saved us a lovely spot. The fishing is better here but quite a hike from the campsites. And now it’s rainbow trout, very good.
