Aug 24, 2010 - Peace River Bear
Tuesday afternoon: At Mile 54 we turned off the Alaskan Highway and continued our journey on highway 29, a Scenic Route that winds through the Peace River Valley. The road turned north before descending into the valley, providing us with another milestone. At 56 degrees and 18.6 minutes north latitude this is the farthest north our RV has ever been, and it is the farthest north we will get on this trip. The Peace River Valley was all the reward we needed for coming here, serene and beautiful the entire 80 kilometers to the campground. As an...

Jun 20, 2010 - Hudson's Hope, BC
June 20, 2010 day 15 We are still at Moberly Lake. Clear skies and warm. It will get into the 80’s today. We are going to drive the truck north to visit the Peace Canyon Dam, the Bennett Dam and the town of Hudson’s Hope. All three are about 40 miles from Chetwynd off hwy 97. On the way we saw what we thought was a wolf but was told it was a coyote; they are much bigger than the ones in California. We also saw one deer. There is not many animals out this time of the day. The two dams are in tandem; that is the water from the Bennett Dam...

Jun 17, 2009 - Hudson's Hope and W.A.C Dam
Hudson’s Hope area was first visited in 1793 by explorer Alexander Mackenzie. In 1805 a Hudson’s Bay trading post was established for fur trading. Later in its history there was a major influx of settlers. It was also the final stop of steamboats that navigated the lower Peace River until 1936. Our exploration of the area started with a visit to the W.A.C Bennett Dam where we took and excellent guided tour of the dam. The construction of the dam took five years being completed in 1967 and employed more than 4,800 people at its peak. The 600...

Jun 16, 2009 - Hudson Hope here we come
After a few days in Prince George where we stocked up with supplies and got a new power cord for our cell phone amplifier booster we head north again. For anybody heading to Alaska, Yukon and North West Territories the publication “Milepost” is a must. It details by each northern road the location of services, attractions, scenic vistas, campgrounds, pullouts and road conditions. Most travellers head to Dawson Creek however our various travel guides suggested that the final part of the road from Prince George to Dawson Creek starting at...

Aug 13, 2008 - A nice day
Happy Birthday to Barb!! And a sunny morning to boot. When we parked last night there was no view of anything but now you can see far across a broad valley with clouds hanging very low below us filling the bottom of the valley. With the sun shimmering on the wet trees it is quite a beautiful sight. I walked up the piece of old Alaska Hwy we are parked next to remembering the days when there were so many more hills and curves. There are just so many massive cuts and fills that it really makes it easier to drive. Especially with a heavy pig...

Woke up to a light rain and decided togo see the dam today and hope for better weather to try to photograph the chainsaw sculptures tomorrow. Hudson's Hope is a delightful little town with a wonderful info center and friendly people, we even got to give back this time and they wanted to know more about our full time lifestyle and where we went and what we did, also got questioned about free camping in the US and in return learned alot about the W.A.C.Bennett Dam and the dinosaur footprints and bones they found in this area, especially when...

Jul 28, 2007 - Hudson's Hope/WAC Bennett Dam
Today we are off to Hudson's Hope and the WAC Bennett Dam. On the leisurely drive to Hudson's Hope (approx. 1 hour) we enjoyed the views of the Peace River valley and LOTS of deer. We saw them everywhere, which was great. Up until now we have only seen dead moose on the side of the road. We even saw a big black bear running across the road in front of us. Not enough time for a picture! The WAC Bennett Dam was built by BC Hydro to provide power for the Lower Mainland of BC. It is an earthen dam, which is very unique and at the time it was...

We turn off the Alaska Highway to take the Hudson Hope Loop. First stop: Chetwynd. The International Chainsaw Carving Contest is held here. There are many carvings to see throughout the town. We continue on to Moberly Lake...
