May 3, 2016 - Balfour to Fernie

Last night enjoyed a long soak at Ainsworth Hot Springs, they took the water temperature and found it was 103.1, they said it should be 104.....no wonder it felt cold! 񏘉 First time ever, a free ferry ride this morning, Balfour to Kootenay Bay. Headed south on 3A through Gray Creek and on to Boswell and the Glass House, built by David Brown in 1952/53 and is made up of over 500,000 empty embalming fluid bottles, featuring 2 beds, 1 bath, kitchen, living room, patio, round house, archway and so much more! The bottles are empty with caps...

May 1, 2016 - The Crowsnest to Fernie

We were up early, packed up and set off for Fernie. As we left Calgary the Rockies were visible on our right with their winter coats of snow still clinging to their slopes. Against the advice of our Calgary friends, we took the Sarcee Trail to the Deerfoot on the assumption that, being Sunday morning it would be quiet - it was not! I am glad I do not have to use that route on a working day as it must be bedlam. However, we were soon on Highway 2 and made good time to Nanton where we refuelled. The forecourt was full of bikers. We headed...

Sep 18, 2014 - Day 40 - Crowsnest Pass & Fernie

We left Lee Lake after breakfast and drove through the Crowsnest Pass (with detours to see downtown Blairmore and downtown Coleman) to Fernie, BC and then up a long winding road to Island Lake Lodge, on Mount Fernie - a beautiful resort consisting of 3 rustic looking log buildings overlooking the mountains (including three peaks dubbed "Mama Bear, Papa Bear and Baby Bear"). After a stop at the lodge for a coffee, we hiked a trail through some old growth cedars and then had a lovely lunch in the dining room. On the way back, we drove through...

Sep 21, 2012 - Recap of the last 4 weeks

Aug 15, 2012 Leave on our journey headed for Krista’s wedding. Drive to Moose Jaw and spend the night at the Walmart. Aug 16, 2012 Depart Moose Jaw and head for the border at North Portal, SK. We had three US customs officers spend 15 minutes going through the motorhome after a 30 minute wait to have our turn. They concluded all was in order and sent us on our way. Now to make up some time. We continued until dusk and made it to Bemidji, Minnesota and were welcomed at another Walmart. Aug 17, 2012 After a good night’s sleep we had to deal...

Jul 5, 2009 - Fernie

July 5 We drove back into the blessed mountains today. The Rockies are gorgeous around Crow Nest Pass and Fernie. We have made a note to stop and stay at Crow's Nest Pass next time we come through as it is in a beautiful mountain setting. We stopped in Sparwood and walked around the town. We found one gigantic mining truck. In Fernie we're parked at a Prov. Camp site. It only has toilets - no showers. Also water taps that we can't attach hoses to to fill up the trailers. The setting in Fernie is a beautiful mountain setting. It has lovely...

Oct 6, 2008 - FERNIE!

Hello Everyone! I'm so sorry that we haven't written in a while. Life has been hectic, packing up everything in Vancouver and moving on to our new home - Fernie! I have only been here 4 days and have absolutely fallen in love with this little town. There's around 10,000 people I think and we have the most amazing house and view of the Lizard range and Fernie Mountain. I'll post some photos up soon. It has all been a bit of a whirlwind over the last month, we made some great friends in Vancouver and had one hellofa leaving party: I'm...

May 6, 2008 - Getting excited to take off....

So I'm really just testing this thing out to see how it works and how it looks! It's just over a week until we take off and even though I have to wait I really don't want to, work is fairly slow and it's beautiful outside! So painful. My busy season is over and Dave is just starting his - so after a long, snowy, school and injury filled winter... we're outa here! The plan is to leave Fernie early-ish next Friday 16th of May to drive to Calgary and get on the plane at 6.30pm to connect to our flight out of Vancouver, that is if we get...

Feb 13, 2008 - Fernie!...Need we say more??!

Back to Vancouver and the bus journey from hell was to ensue! 18hrs in the land of nod would transport us to the winter wonderland that is Fernie B.C..Canada for those who aint caught up for a while! Flakes of powdery goodness fell from the heavens for the entire journey...Gem was mostly excited by this as it meant great boarding conditions lay ahead! Upon arrival we checked in to "The Raging Elk" hostel and home for the next two weeks. A quality establishment located centrally with all the amenities two snowboarding bums could wish for!...

Jan 5, 2008 - Last day of snowboarding on tour- Fernie Alpine Resort

Our last day of snowboarding on a tour was a big one at Fernie Alpine Resort. We arrived at the resort at 9am and were pleasently surprised by the warm temp (2degrees). Of course being from a hotter climate we didn't realise this means the snow starts to melt and everything at the base turns to slush. Kenrick and i hit the slopes and he continued to impress. I even had my moments and by the end of the day i could say i have nailed my turns! We took lots of pics, and the view from the top was great. At the end of the day we returned to the...

Jan 4, 2008 - Fernie Alpine Resort

After a horrible night's sleep on a urine-proof plastic mattress we hit Fernie mountain. The weather looked ominous as there were dark clouds and it was only -2 which means there is a chance of rain not just snow- luckily though it turned out an okay day with only rain at the end fo the day. We headed up the chair lift after discovering that the lessons at Fernie are well overpriced! I have to admit i did a really odd stack off the chair lift on my first attempt. I didn't get off in time so the lift stopped once i went too far and i...

Jan 3, 2008 - Lazy day- Golden to Fernie

Today was a fabulously lazy day! We slept in and didn't leave our hostel until 10:30am. Stopped at Tim Houghton's which is a famous Canadian coffee/donut place so we bought 6 donuts- not as good as Puffin Fresh. Very nutritional way to start the day! Drove for two hours before arriving at Radiujm Hot Springs.(Kenrick was very happy to see his first cows and horses- poor things were standing in paddocks full of snow) We weren't sure what to expect as it looked just like a rec centre pool from the outside.Pools are filled with natural hot...
