Jul 28, 2009 - Dease Lake, BC

Dease Lake, BC - July 28, 2009 Temperature - mid 90’s – Sunny We left Teslin, Yukon this morning around 9:00. After driving for 7 hours and traveling about 290 miles we arrived at Dease Lake RV Park in Dease Lake. The roads were very rough with lots of construction and frost heaves. The scenery was beautiful but it sure was a long day. After arriving and setting up we had problems with the electricity. We were on the end of the row and our breaker kept tripping when we had our air conditioner on. After a while things settled down and we...

Jul 16, 2009 - Tok Ak. to Iscut, B.C.

We're back in business with wifi after having no service since we left Tok. We have traveled an additional 840 rough, bumpy and sometimes muddy miles since then. We are actually at the small community of Iscut, B.C., located on the Cassiar Highway. Believe me when I say that they use the term "highway" loosely. It is a very narrow road, there are frost heaves, pot holes, there is gravel that is wet and therefore it is mud, plus road construction areas of additional dirt/mud. The road is such that it requires full concentration for driving...

Jun 30, 2009 - British Columbia unfolds before us

We arrived in British Columbia on June 25 and traveled basically north for five days, enjoying beautiful Canadian Rockies and rolling farm land. Cattle, corn and raspberries were plentiful. BC offers wonderful provincial (government owned and operated) campgrounds and we stayed in these four out of five days. While in BC we saw bears twice, a moose, a fox, a rabbit... and of course many birds. These photos cannot capture the "biggedness" of this country -- we made up that word since nothing really explains BC's grandeur. But we hope you...

Sep 13, 2008 - Creeping and Cruising down the Cassiar Highway

Creeping down the Cassiar-Day 1 Saturday, September 13th was one of our longest drives ever, 297 miles. We left Teslin about our usual time, 10:30am. Even when we have long driving days, we don’t seem to be able to get up early and get going. We drove 148 miles on the Alaska Highway, a piece of cake compared to the next 149 miles down the Cassiar Highway. Not long after we turned onto the Cassiar Highway, we saw what all our compatriots have been talking about. The Alaska Highway from the border may have its frost heaves, but the Cassiar...

Aug 19, 2008 - Dease Lake then Hyder

We headed out this morning around 10am. for Jade City, did some shopping then headed to Dease Lake for the night. On our way we saw the most brillant Rainbow I have ever seen. I posted a few of the better picture I took of it. We had breakfast then off to Hyder. We saw two bears, one had two cubs, on our way down. The weather has turned rainy and foggy.

Aug 10, 2008 - Dease Lake BC

Another great driving day. Seems us that every travel day the weather has been good to us. Roads are clear, skies partly sunny and the scenery is the same. Just beautiful. If you can imagine, vivid green mountain sides, crystal clear lakes, streams and ponds and green grass in the valleys then you have a good idea of what we are seeing today. As I mentioned the roads were clear and that is because there was no pavement on top of the dirt. 123 miles of dirt, bumps, and rocks both large and small. Since it was a short driving day we just took...

Aug 1, 2008 - Dease Lake, BC

(Friday August 1) It was time to bid farewell to Whitehorse and move on toward the south. I hardly situated myself in the observation seat when I spied a Red Fox running along the highway. I knew all about most of the route today, because we had traveled the same road coming north. I may be old, but I’m savvy. Then the old folks threw a curve at me and turned onto the Cassiar Highway. This began a new adventure for all of us.I saw Three Prong Horn? Sheep climbing up the hillside just next to the road as we drove along. We stopped at Jade...

Jul 20, 2008 - Dease Lake British Columbia

We drove about 350 miles yesterday to almost Watson Lake Yukon. Weather cloudy and some rainy areas. New snow on the mountains again. These mountain tops are 5000-6000 ft. elevation. I spoke to a local resident who stated it is about a month early for snow on the mountains. Another cloudy then rainy day. We drove south of Watson Lake Yukon to Dease Lake in British Columbia. We had 12 miles of muddy road so needless to say trailer and truck are caked with brown mud. We will continue south tomorrow and make our way to Hyder Alaska which is on...

Jul 1, 2008 - Cassiar Hwy

Another gorgeous morning. How lucky can we be?? Drove thru Kitwanga, not much there. Topped off with fuel at $1.46/liter and headed up the hiway. The road was great for the first 150 miles, not too hilly and could cruise right along. Very, very little traffic. After that we hit construction for 24 miles but it wasn’t too bad really and then it turned to cold rolled asphalt which is just not as smooth and a little more rolly polly. Could still cruise along 35 to 50. There were always mountains around everywhere. Had the Coast range on the...

Jun 26, 2008 - Day 45 - Cassiar Hwy. - to Dease Lake, BC

Last night we only got a couple hours sleep because of MOSQUITOES! They were buzzing around our heads at night. We killed lots of them, but there were always more. Finally, about 5 A.M., we gave up and got up and got ready to go. I couldn't get the shower in the womens' restroom to warm up at all, so I ended up skipping my shower. We were on the road before 7 A.M. Conrad stopped for another cup of coffee and then for a little nap in a rest area. We went to Wolf it Down restaurant at Nugget City (on the Alaska Hwy right before we were going...

Jun 22, 2008 - Stewart to Dease Lake

It started raining heavily as we went out to ready the trailer for travel and hookup. It rained off and on the entire day, including a heavy shower that started just as we pulled into our sites for the night. It rained again in the night and is drizzling this morning. We did see a small black bear but not long enough to get any pictures as it was off into the brush almost as soon as we saw it along the edge of the highway. There was a 20 mile stretch that was being prepared for major road construction: they had installed new culverts....
