Jul 20, 2006 - Dawson Creek, BC
Yesterday we spent the day checking out the sights in Prince George, BC. Went over to the railway and forestry museum, but it was very disappointing. It had a couple of rail cars open, a couple of locomotives, only one steam and very little connected with the forest industry. In the afternoon, we went to Kathie's favorite tourist attraction ... DA DAA The local Mall. Today we left Prince George and headed for Dawson Creek, where we are to meet up with the rest of the folks going on the caravan. The trip started out through the middle of...

Jul 16, 2006 - On to Dawson Creek, British Columbia
Mile 7614 We arrived in Dawson Creek after stops in Valmont, Jasper and Prince George. Jasper was a neat little, touristy town but the other two were not of much note. Dawson Creek is the start of the Alaska Highway: an engineering marvel built in 8 months of 1942 during WWII. The bombing of Pearl harbor in December of the previous year made the US of A very nervous about Japan's proximity to the Aleutians in Alaska and we sort of bullied Canada in allowing us to build the highway. We actually went ahead and started before the agreements...

Jun 21, 2006 - Dawson Creek - Mile "0" of the Alaskan Highway
We pulled into the Mile "0" RV Park in Dawson Creek, BC, at about 3 in the afternoon. We were kinda lucky to get a site because they had a caravan coming in and they had most of the campground reserved. I guess this is something we will have to deal with all the way into Alaska. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, the American and Canadian governments felt the need to shore up and protect the sovereignty of North America. In response, a secure land transportation link was needed to transfer military goods, materials, and men...

Jun 21, 2006 - Quesnel to Dawson Creek BC
Dawson Creek Our adventure to Dawson Creek began at 5:45 A.M. The sun had been up since 4 A.M. and all were awake. We had over 340 miles to travel that day and wanted to be into Dawson Creek early afternoon to make sure we could find a RV park. The road was good and had a few steep grades. While we (in the states) have very few grades over 6 percent incline, 7 to 9 percent is the general rule with many exceeding 10 percent. Now that gets pretty steep when towing a car behind the motorhome. I need to downshift into a lower gear and go...

Jun 20, 2006 - Quesnel to Dawson Creek
We finally got a campground with internet. It is the 24th but you are getting the past reports. Roxanne 6:45, 35526 As we leave Quesnel we begin to climb, we leave the valley and head into trees. This is deer, moose and elk country. There are lots of deer in the trees and fields, but no moose in the small lakes. We are headed to Prince George nearly 2100 feet in elevation. The roads have been good, lots of passing lanes, few S curves and few bumpy spots. Guess I spoke too soon, we just hit a road construction sign. Speed limit has been...

6/16/06- Finally!!!!!!! Got to Mile 0 of the Alaska Highway in Dawson Creek. We are staying at Tubby's RV Park - and all I can say about that is that it was aptly named. When we got to the RV park, we found that they had an RV wash so Bob and I washed the RV. I also did some laundry there because it takes much less time to use the commercial laundry than to do the wash in our washer/drier. We then went to the Visitors Center, got lots of information about the highway and various stops along the way and watched a film on the building of the...

June 10, 2006 We left our campground at 8:15 this morning. Just north of Prince George at 8:45 a.m., Dave spotted a moose in a water hole at the side of the road. It was so exciting. Dave stopped the motor home at the edge of the road and we ran outside with the camera and took pictures of it before it walked off into the woods. A short time later, 10:50 a.m., we stopped at Bijoux Falls Provincial Park. The closer we walked to the falls, the colder it was. We took some pictures. Dave washed the windshield of the motor home. Back on the...

May 27, 2006 - Milepost "0"
Today has been a very exciting day for us. Our drive from Prince George to Dawson Creek was only about 250 miles but we took our time and made a lot of stops along the way. When we left we were in a forest. So many of the trees were dead. It made for beautiful colors because of all the shades of green and then the rusty color of the dead pines. This is natures way of taking care of the forest and the Mountain Pine Beetles have been killing off the trees. A good part of British Columbia has this happening right now. The area that is...

May 13, 2006 - Mackenzie to Dawson Creek, BC
I saw another bear and a moose today on a very nice drive from Mackenzie to Dawson Creek with nearly no traffic. Weather is warm, about 62 degrees, sunny and slight breeze. It was near freezing last night in Mackenzie as evidenced by the frost on Bigfoot this morning. A case of Miller beer cost me US$31.23. The US price is half that. Rib steak is US$15 a pound. I passed on the steak and bought more beer. Kokanee at $34.25 a case - you gotta pay for quality. It goes against my nature but I'll say that I'm meeting some pretty nice people up...

rts: rt97 - miles 281/7103 - camp near here - there we not many campgrounds along the hiway, so you had to just pull off anywhere level - most of the time you camped where you see others - also you had to be really careful of wild bears/cougars etc even deer/moose would attack the camper... bathrooms were a real problem, especially for ladies - usually you did the bath thing at a resturant before camp - OUR ALASKA 1975 PHOTOS DAY 26

Jun 21, 2005 - The Canadian Rockies are Magnificent!
We stayed three nights in Quesnel, BC with the motorhome positioned for a view of Dragon Lake. On the grassy shore Canada geese were parading their goslings for the admiration of the tourists. One family appeared to have 10 children, others as few as four. What caught our attention was something we called Mother Goose Day Care: there would be dozens of goslings gathered together, watched over by four or five adults. These adults would scare away other birds they felt were intruders and keep a wary eye on the human observers. In the town of...

Jun 14, 2005 - He Picked the Best !
This is going to be a quick post this evening, we have things to do and places to go....hehe I had to put up some pictures and let you all know I'm going to be eating crow for a while. Yep....Eric picked the better side trip. Of course, we like mountain country....some people might not and would like something else. We climbed over the Heritage Hwy Summit and enjoyed beautiful views of the Rockys....lots of creeks and small valleys and I wish the weather would have been a bit better for prettier color in the pictures. We had a little...
