Aug 7, 2010 - Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta
Saturday was a 260 mile day, but well worth it! We went over to Waterton Lakes National Park, part of the Waterton Glacier International Peace Park. This park in southwestern Alberta is super gorgeous. We came in through the windy road called Chief Mountain Road; the name is from the most prominent mountain along the roadway. Beautiful road even though several miles of the surface was just chip sealed. Both the Akamina Parkway and the Red Rock Canyon Parkway were beautiful, but since some construction is being done at the end of the Red...

Jun 13, 2010 - Bear Necessity!
Our final day in Waterton NP saw us driving the Akamina Parkway to Cameron Lake and then the Red Rock Parkway. On all the other times we had been to Waterton we had seen bears. Today was no exception. As we drove along the Cameron Creek our first bear was spotted enjoying the dandelions along the road side. He was a beautiful tan colour. We took a short walk to Crandell Lake. Jenny did very well walking 2.4 km with a number of rests and of course a paddle in the lake. Just after getting back to the Jeep and continuing along the road we...

Jun 12, 2010 - The perfect day
It was a beautiful day so we headed out to walk some of the Waterton Lakeshore trail. If you walk far enough you actually come to the American border although we didn’t get that far. We were in no rush and enjoyed stopping to enjoy the views at overlooks above the lake, admiring the many wild flowers along the trail and sit at times by the lakeside in quiet bays. This was why we chose to travel to see nature at its best. Life couldn’t be better. A perfect day!

Jun 11, 2010 - Bear's Hump with views!
We started the day with a gently walk into the township of Waterton along the side of the lake. Jenny enjoyed a quick paddle as usual. The weather was a little grey and it was a bit cold as well. However we all enjoyed our walk but were thankful for a stop at the local coffee shop for a hot drink. After lunch and after Heather had taken some more photos of the coach we left Jenny in the coach for her to have her afternoon siesta and headed to just behind the visitor centre to walk the Bear’s Hump trail. This trail was classified as...

Jun 10, 2010 - Goodbye Glacier NP, Hello Waterton Lakes NP
We left St Mary and headed along the Chief Mountain International Highway to cross the border into Canada and the Waterton Lakes National Park the other part of the Glacier Mountains but in Canada. As we travelled along the highway we got great views of Chief Mountain at 9,080 feet. Our border crossing into Canada was straight forward, in fact one of the quickest so far, so we arrived at the Town site campground in Waterton in time for lunch. We had decided to visit Waterton again (this was our third time) for our final “fix” of the Rockies...

Jun 7, 2010 - Waterton National Park, Waterton, Alberta, Canada
We got through customs without a hitch. At Cardston, Alberta, we decided to visit Waterton National Park which is the northern part of Glacier N.P. We found a campsite easily in the village of Waterton just a few blocks from downtown. It was a neat park with a large colony of Columbia ground squirrels living there. You really had to watch where you walked since the ground was full of large holes such as you would see with prairie dogs. Waterton is much smaller that Glacier. There are hundreds of hiking trails but only two scenic drives...

May 20, 2010 - Waterton Lakes National Park
The winds returned about 2:30 am, and with it came the cold. By the time we were hooked up and ready to go I had two sweatshirts and a jacket on. Jean learned from me and began layering before she left the warmth of the trailer. We could see it was snowing in the park and it felt like it would get to us before we could be on the road. Although we had frozen hands, we beat the snow and headed for the Canadian border and the northern part of the park. It was a relatively short run, about 60 miles, with the wind and narrow, rough roads, it...

Aug 31, 2009 - Waterton and Taber corn - Yummy!
Good Morning! We met Janelle for breakfast and got caught up on the many events since our last visit a few years ago. Hard to imagine that when we met back in the early 80’s I babysat this little girl and even changed her diapers - and now here she is guarding our country’s borders! My, time does fly by quickly. After eating she talks us into another road trip – this time Janelle drives us down to Waterton Park. Along the way we spot rows of elegant looking windmills gracefully rotating their arms in the wind. I just sat back and took...

Aug 19, 2009 - Waterton Lakes, Alberta
We spent 2 nights in Waterton Lakes National Park. This is a lesser known park in Alberta that sits on the US-Canada border. It is adjacent to Glacier National Park in the U.S. and the two parks come together to form the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. It is here that the foothills and prairie lands of Alberta meet the Rockies. The wind blew very hard our first day there and we discovered that wind is pretty much a weather constant. Fortunately, the next 2 days were warm, with light breezes. (In the winter winds of over 100 mph...

Jul 4, 2009 - International Peace Hike
When I left home I knew that I would be in Canada on July 4 so I thought that I would not be celebrating our summer holiday. I still did not celebrate it as I would have if I had been home, but taking the International Peace Hike was quite appropriate. From the Waterton Glacier Guide: “In 1932, Waterton Lakes National Park and Glacier National Park were officially joined together as Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. The Peace Park celebrates the peace and goodwill existing along the world’s longest undefended border, as well as a...

Jul 3, 2009 - Biking Sun Road and Driving to Waterton
Because of my camera problem yesterday, I chose to do my laundry in the afternoon, request a late check out from the campground for Friday, and ride the Sun Road again. (The camera problem was an issue because I figured the first time I went out without it I would see a bear. By this morning I had determined that if I turned the camera on and waited 70 seconds, then I could take a picture. Otherwise no functions worked.) Today I shuttled to the top, Logan Pass, elevation 6600 feet. I was pumped for this. It was cold and windy at the St....
