Sep 3, 2011 - Waterton Lakes, Alberta

Our return to Waterton Lakes, Alberta brought a sunny day with perfect temperatures for our boat ride across Waterton Lake to Goat Haunt in the US section of Glacier National Park. In 1932 the individual parks were joined as one international peace park. A very knowledgeable young man, who grew up in the area, narrated our trip. We crossed the international border on the boat. Once we were in Goat Haunt, we had a half hour to wander around. We took advantage of the time by walking across the US checkpoint, showing our passports to the...

Aug 31, 2011 - A trip to Waterton Lakes, Alberta

Although the day was rainy with low hanging clouds, we enjoyed the drama of the scenery created by the weather. It was a perfect day to enjoy High Tea in the Prince of Wales Hotel in Waterton Lakes, Alberta.

Aug 30, 2011 - Alberta bound

So apparently they have rogue cows in Montana, since we had a few almost get run over by the truck on the road to the border. Jainalee was so funny during our trip as she always wanted to be with Amberlea and a few times she tried to get out of her seat to cuddle with Amberlea . . . while we were driving! The concept of a seatbelt elludes her apparently. During the drive we went up one road that about half way through it had a sign that said vehicles longer than 21 feet weren't allowed. Not sure why that sign wasn't posted when we turned...

Aug 15, 2011 - Waterton Lakes National Park - Canadian version of Glacier

Our CG overlooks Lower St. Mary's Lake, very pretty setting. We drive Chief Mountain International Highway which goes into Canada. ,”where the mountains meet the prairie”. Lots of wildflowers but not much wildlife. The Red Rock Parkway meanders over rolling prairie a distance of 9 miles. It includes a view of Mt. Blakiston, the parks highest peak. We have a nice lunch at the Prince of Whales Hotel overlooking Waterton Lake. Next we drive Many Glacier Trail (known for it's hiking trails) before returning to the CG.

Jul 31, 2011 - Waterton Glacier Park Canada

Went to Canada Glacier National Park at Waterton yesterday. First we toured the town and than went to Red Rock Canyon and took a brief hike. Everyone was wading in the river. It was a long day. We went on a two hour cruise. Thought we would see some wildlife but didn't. Disappointed. We had to be back across the border before 10 . Just made it. Didn't help that we got lost after we got off the boat at 9:00. We made it. Mule deer roam the town and don't seem to be bothered by the crowds. Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Jun 12, 2011 - Red Rock Canyon Parkway

2011-06-12 Red Rock Canyon Parkway This morning we stopped by the visitor center and upgraded to Parks Canada Discovery Pass. This pass gets us into all of Canada’s National Parks for one whole year. The other item we need to attend to is changing our billing plan with Verizon to include Canada for voice & data. It seems getting a 3G network in Canada is going to be spotty. We may have to find coffee shops with internet. I’m going to try to write every night and save it in Word so when we do get to the World Wide Web I can upload everything...

May 21, 2011 - Waterton Lakes NP

Day 7 Miles: 79 Total: 1894 Campground: Townsite, Waterton Lakes Village, Waterlon Lakes NP Our early morning drive to Rising Sun and Many Glacier gave us more spectacular views of the mountains and the lakes. As we were leaving the park at Many Glacier a big moose was galloping across the road. Our entrance in to Canada was uneventful and took about 2 minutes at the Chief Mountain border crossing. As we drove north, the awesome view of Chief Mountain was visible for many miles. This mountain is a huge outcropping with shear walls and it...

Aug 7, 2010 - Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta

Saturday was a 260 mile day, but well worth it! We went over to Waterton Lakes National Park, part of the Waterton Glacier International Peace Park. This park in southwestern Alberta is super gorgeous. We came in through the windy road called Chief Mountain Road; the name is from the most prominent mountain along the roadway. Beautiful road even though several miles of the surface was just chip sealed. Both the Akamina Parkway and the Red Rock Canyon Parkway were beautiful, but since some construction is being done at the end of the Red...

Jun 13, 2010 - Bear Necessity!

Our final day in Waterton NP saw us driving the Akamina Parkway to Cameron Lake and then the Red Rock Parkway. On all the other times we had been to Waterton we had seen bears. Today was no exception. As we drove along the Cameron Creek our first bear was spotted enjoying the dandelions along the road side. He was a beautiful tan colour. We took a short walk to Crandell Lake. Jenny did very well walking 2.4 km with a number of rests and of course a paddle in the lake. Just after getting back to the Jeep and continuing along the road we...

Jun 12, 2010 - The perfect day

It was a beautiful day so we headed out to walk some of the Waterton Lakeshore trail. If you walk far enough you actually come to the American border although we didn’t get that far. We were in no rush and enjoyed stopping to enjoy the views at overlooks above the lake, admiring the many wild flowers along the trail and sit at times by the lakeside in quiet bays. This was why we chose to travel to see nature at its best. Life couldn’t be better. A perfect day!

Jun 11, 2010 - Bear's Hump with views!

We started the day with a gently walk into the township of Waterton along the side of the lake. Jenny enjoyed a quick paddle as usual. The weather was a little grey and it was a bit cold as well. However we all enjoyed our walk but were thankful for a stop at the local coffee shop for a hot drink. After lunch and after Heather had taken some more photos of the coach we left Jenny in the coach for her to have her afternoon siesta and headed to just behind the visitor centre to walk the Bear’s Hump trail. This trail was classified as...
