Aug 19, 2013 - BAR U Ranch and Okotoks

We left Waterton a day early because one of the main attractions, the Akamina Parkway was closed for repairs after the huge floods which hit Alberta June 19. So instead of going directly to Banff we took our time and were greatly rewarded. The drive along Canada 22 north from Waterton towards Banff is some of the most beautiful country we have seen anywhere. The rolling foothills and high prairie are intermittently arrayed with lush cattle land and green forests. We visited the BAR U Ranch, a Canadian National Historic Site, preserving the...

Jul 4, 2012 - Okotoks

Not much to report; today we left our campground in High River and drove about 20 minutes to Country Lane RV Park in Okotoks, the park we previously reserved with proximity to the train to Calgary. This park consists of mostly seasonal RV's and manufactured homes. All the lots are beautifully maintained and the lawns are gorgeous. I don't think they get the heat we do to burn them. There's a pool, but it's going to have to get a lot warmer to interest me in a swim. It was low 70's today, no wind, real nice day. Ed got an oil change on the...

We left Great Falls this morning under cloudy skys. As the day progressed the weather slowely worsened. It rained on and off from 10 oclock till 4 oclock. We then had decided to call it a day. It's been mostly cool during the day, sweatshirt weather since we entered South Dakota till now. The local weather man predicted another dreary rainey day with much improvement due Saturday. We expect to enter Banff park sometime tomorrow. Here in the campground there are several deer that can be approched to within 50 feet. Kinda fun to do. We...

May 21, 2010 - Canada and their May Long Weekend

Today we head into Canada! We continued west from Havre, MT to US Interstate 15 North and entered Canada at Sweet Grass, MT crossing. No problems with customs. Then we stopped at a visitors centre and found out that today was the start of the May Long Weekend in Canada (Monday is Visctoria Day Holiday) and were advised that all the campgrounds would likely be full for the weekend. Yep they were right, we tried to go to a nice municipal park but it was full and the staff referred us to the WalMart parking lot in Okotoks! The WalMart was...

Sep 1, 2009 - Okotoks, Alberta

This morning we decided that we like it here in Okotoks, so we paid for another night. We spent the day relaxing in our lawn chairs, did some minor cleaning of the 5er, took a short walk, I cooked some chicken in the Dutch oven, and grilled some burgers. Cheryl organized her two file cabinets of maps and brochures. It was nice to not wear winter clothing in August! While I sat in my lawn chair I made the following lists of observations from our time in Alaska. The people of Alaska and their clothing: - Anything made by Carhartt - Trousers...

Our route today: South on Yellowhead Highway to junction with Highway 93 Icefields Parkway. South on Highway 93 to Calgary, then south on Provincial Route 2 to Okotoks. About 2:00 am this morning, Cheryl got all worked up because there was no AC power to the 5er. She made me get out of bed and go outside to see if we had tripped a breaker on the site power post. Nope. Everything was dark in the park. I went back to bed. We are RVing. Why do you need AC power at 2:00 am? In the morning, we learned that the big forest fire in Kamloops had...

May 28, 2008 - Back in Calgary

We finally returned home after a stop in Jasper and are back on our RV lot near Okotoks. Kind of sad that our 1 year journey is ended, but we have decided that we will be spending more time in the south during the winter months. Our tenants have requested to rent our home for another year, so we decided that we would give them that choice, so we will be living in our RV for another year. We will be here till the end of October when we will head to the west coast till after US thanksgiving and then will head south and stay there till end of...
