May 4, 2009 - Cultural Sensations
So it is Sunday evening (26th April) and I have just arrived back from an amazing weekend in Babungo. ... We were headed for Shamsul's house in Babungo, a village, about an hour and half from Bamenda. ... The journey to Babungo was spectacular, large mountain peaks across an expanse of flat plains, too difficult to describe but very different to when I took the same road out to Kumbo in my first week. ...

May 4, 2009 - The last word
This is my last day in Cameroon. I have already left Bamenda which became my home for the last two months. ... They have a small daughter and a very different lifestyle from the volunteers in Bamenda. ... It has hopefully eased my culture shock that I will surely feel when arriving home – as I have been traveling round in their big 4x4 and yesterday we spent that afternoon at an outdoor pool under palm trees! I am sad that my time in Cameroon is coming to an end, of course I will be very happy to see loved ones but I have had a wonderful experience from so many different perspectives, I have met wonderful people and made very good friends, had my prejudices and assumptions questioned and slapped in my face, become more patient and relaxed, been professionally challenged and my eyes opened. This is my last day in Cameroon. So I have had another really good week in Bamenda. ... I am not sure – maybe Bamenda city centre?, like mile 1, 2 etc or by specific landmarks, like the Baptist Centre where I am staying is at 'Finance Junction', there is 'City Chemist' round about – where city Chemist is, the Food Market, Hospital Junction, T junction etc. ... I have just over a week left in Bamenda, I will be sad to leave. ...

Apr 16, 2009 - Loving Limbe
45am and we made our way to Limbe, on the coast, near the base of Mount Cameroon, in the South West Region. ... The roads to Limbe were pretty well maintained and the scenery exquisite, dramatic green peaks and valleys with silvery tin roofs clinging to the mountainside and sparkling in the sun – like coins that had been dropped on a lawn. ... We finally arrived outside Limbe where we were dropped and told to get on a little mini bus which would take us the rest of the way – we were a little dubious as we anticipated having another lengthy wait before we left, but surprisingly it left pretty much straight away (often you are left not knowing what is really happening due to mis-communications and sometimes being told what people think you want to hear rather than what is actually happening). ... So we were dropped in busy hustling bustling Limbe which immediately enabled us to decide that we wanted to stay out of town by the beach so we took another taxi to Seme beach – finally we arrived at our hotel – 7pm the total journey taking us 12 hours! It was all worth it though. ... Limbe is tropical in incredibly hot and humid. ...

My time in Cameroon feels like it is wizzing by. I have felt pretty comfortable here this week to the extent that it has felt like a 'normal' week in Bamenda. ... Wow I now have wireless internet connection in the Baptist Centre where I am staying!!! Woohoo, actually I am not that excited but I didn't think it would happen as for two weeks it has been it will be fixed tomorrow. We climb up above Bamenda and the views are spectacular, when it is not too hazy/dusty or smoky to see. ... Sorry for the delay in updating the blog but we have only just got onto internet for the first time in 2 weeks today. We bush camped most of the way and even had one night camping in a Catholic Mission and another with a locals cows! After 3 nights bush camping we finally made it to Lake Lagado where we could shower and swim in the lake (we probably now have bilharzia!) but we were so pleased to have a wash - we basically have only had 2 proper showers in 2 weeks - I dread to think what we smell like! From the lake we then headed to Garoua to stock up on provisions and then out to the Cameroon/Nigeria border at Demsa. ... Border is probably not the right word seeing as there was nothing there (the actual border and no mans land was a dried up river bed) and there was no military around - quite quick really and only 3 and half hours.Sorry for the delay in updating the blog but we have only just got onto internet for the first time in 2 weeks today.
