Aug 26, 2009 - Sightseeing in Brunei’s Capital Bandar Seri Begawan on Our Last Day in Borneo

It is Wednesday night. We are in the air on an AirAsia flight from Brunei to Kuala Lumpur. In KL we will spend the night before flying to the city of Manado on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia late tomorrow afternoon. After 3 fun weeks in Borneo, we are on our way out of there. Our trip to Brunei proved to be short but definitely memorable. We had almost opted to take a pass on Brunei, but changed our minds last minute when we realized how easy a 2 day excursion there from Muri would be. I’m now very glad we did, as Brunei has a...

Break From the Law

Aug 25, 2009 - Overnight Trip to the Sultanate of Brunei Darassalam

It is around 11 p.m., and I am writing this entry from the common area of the Terrace Hotel in the city of Bandar Seri Begawan, called “BSB” by nearly everyone. BSB is the capital of Brunei, the tiny oil rich sultanate lodged along Borneo‘s coast in 2 separate pieces bordering the Malaysian state of Sarawak. We are actually en route to Indonesia, but opted to make a 2 day stopover here to see firsthand this tiny country. Getting to BSB from Miri proved easy. This morning a jeep picked us up from our guesthouse in Miri and shuttled us to...

Break From the Law

Mar 19, 2009 - Into Brunei! Bandar Seri Begawan

Unbelievably it took us 5 bus rides and 1 short ferry crossing to do the 200k trip from Miri to Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB), the capital of the oil rich state of Brunei. Actually oil rich should read Shell Oil rich as this company owns the rights to the oil fields off the coast which provide this tiny country with its wealth. The sultan seems popular enough, the citizens we spoke to only had good words to say about him, however his brother was a different story. The sultans playboy brother Prince Jefri is famous for helping himself to a few...

Dec 14, 2007 - Day 80 - Back to Brunei

We spent the morning at Inspiration Lake, part of the larger Disneyland resort complex. We hired a four person bike and cycled around the lake then lazed in the sun while the girls played on the large playground. We said our fond farewells to Disneyland and took off for Hong Kong Airport to catch our late afternoon flight to Brunei. We overnighted in Brunei courtesy of Royal Brunei Airlines.

Oct 1, 2007 - Day 6 - Off to Brunei

Said our goodbyes to the Astolfis and wondered when we would see them all again. Was feeling a little wary of a 7 hour flight to Brunei but we needn't have worried. It seemed to go very quickly. The kids enjoyed the 'Surfs Up' movie and 'Spiderman 3' and it was great to have the laptop working for added amusement. Alessandra enjoyed looking out of the window as we passed over Indonesia and Holly had me in hysterics using her toothpick to create pea kebabs (but hey...she ate the peas!). A very smooth arrival in Brunei and we got picked up by...

Jul 24, 2007 - Brunei

There are 4 countries in the world that require a visa to get into Brunei, who would of thought Australia would be one of them! But upon visiting the Sultans museum where he has gifts from different countries we realised there were no gifts from Australia, that must be why we need a visa!! Someone send him a present! For our fellow travellers reading this blog, you can get a visa on arrival but the customs officers arent very happy about the extra stamp and paperwork they have to do! We were told it would cost us B$20.00 each for a visa...

Jun 26, 2007 - Being Welcomed in Brunei (Matt)

A karate movie scatters yells, crashing, and thuds around us like the splinters of a chair smashed to smithereens. Between fight scenes, a man-sized eagle watches lingerie-clad women dancing on television. The English subtitles make no sense whatsoever. It is utterly weird. I watch it to pass the time. We are on a one-hour ferry trip to Brunei. We just spent an hour on the island of Pulau Labuan for lunch after a three hour ferry from Kota Kinabalu. We left our guest house at 7AM; we will not finish travelling today until 4PM. Finally, we...

Mar 26, 2007 - Brunei

6 dager i Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB).

Jan 18, 2007 - On way home

Left for the airport at 10am for my flight at 1315 after taking up Rachys advice to get the sleeping tablets as I have a problem sleeping on the plane. Went to checkin qued for quite a while and put my bags in, 24.75kgs allowance of 25kgs....result. Whilst checking in the girl said that I had ordered special meals for all the flights to London. I asked what special meals, as I have a funny bastard of a friend (Justin) who worked for Flight Centre and booked my tickets for me, she said hmmm....lets see....... Kids meals. Nov 7, 2006 - Brunei - Small Country in Borneo

After a 3 hour delay landed in Brunei at around 8pm. After a quick questioning by customs to make sure I wasn't smuggling any alcohol into the dry state I made my way to the APEK Hotel. First impressions of Brunei, leaves me thinking how quiet the place is hardly a soul to be seen, yet also very affluent, lots of nice cars on the roads. Took a taxi from the airport as the public buses stopped running at 5:30. Checked into the hotel some time after 8. Went and grabbed some food at a local cafe and went to bed early. 8th Got up early and set...

Rich Goes Travelling

Sep 4, 2006 - Lawas, Sarawak, Malaysia

First thing in the morning, we headed to the immigration office located in Limbang to get stamped out of Malaysia, even though the actual border was quite a distance away. The morning was foggy, and the water village along the river looked stunning. The first part of the ride was very green, and we passed many little villages. It happened to be garbage day. The smell of garbage was in the air, with some garbage juice spilling onto the road. The garbage men were carefully sifting through each garbage bin before loading it into the truck....
