Feb 12, 2009 - São Paulo

Today was a traveling day... that´s pretty much all I did today... after stuffing everything back in my backpack in the morning (I am getting really good at this!!) I head a 5 hour bus ride to São Paulo ahead of me... that city is HUGE!! 11 million people living there and little Theresa somewhere in between (o: Because we still had 2 1/2 hours before our night bus to Foz do Iguaçu left we wandered around the bus station a bit ... which is the largest of whole latin america!!! and at some point we ended up sitting there with our coffee and...

Dec 15, 2008 - Sao Paulo - The most dangerous city in the World

Spent the last two days in Sao Paulo. Supposed to be the most dangerous city in the world but we made it out alive. We were staying in the gay quarter and were advised not to stare! Myself, Lavinia, Leanne and Colin took a ramble round the first night get a feel for the town. We were told to be careful and what areas to avoid after 7pm. Managed to come across a street filled with working girls. Another street down there was a stage set up and a woman singing to a few stragglers. The first night we hit an Irish bar O´Malley´s cant believe I...

Nov 28, 2008 - Sao Paulo

Well here we are in the second largest city in the world. We really expected it to be overwhelmingly huge and chaotic but we haven’t found that yet. The hotel that we have found ourselves in is in an absolutely beautiful part of the city; Full of life and ‘beautiful’ people. It turns out it is one of the most upscale areas of this huge city. It is clean, safe and very modern. No signs anywhere of the famous favelas so far, but we haven’t ventured too far. What is nice, and I hate to admit it, is the crisp clean feel to everything around...

Sep 11, 2008 - Sao Paulo

Sao Paulo had been included in our plans more because of the people we know there rather than the place itself. As Brazil's largest city (about 11 million people) it is a melting pot of different races and is the home town of almost every Brazilian we have ever met! Thiago, whom we had become good friends with during our 3 weeks in Santiago de Chile, came with his girlfriend Deborah to meet us at our hotel on our first day. We just wandered around the city visiting a luscious green city park, the old town and some busy market streets along...

Aug 16, 2008 - Travel Update

Dear All, After a very relaxing stay in Paraty - a small village on the coast where we lived off fresh fish and watermelon and took a boat trip to local islands where we bathed in secluded beaches, snorkelled, watched turtles and generally relaxed, we now find ourselves in Sao Paulo - what a contrast! This is a city where a third of the population live in slums. it is vast, chaotic, congested and noisy but we have found tranquil areas - the great cathedral - the theatre (modelled on the Paris equivalent) and a large green park. It is 28...

Jul 24, 2008 - Racing through Sáo Paulo

Day 13 - Sáo Paulo Arriving in Sáo Paulo at 8am, we sat in the sun for about an hour to warm up and wake up. The bags got stashed and we ventured exploring. The BANESPA building (housing Santander Bank) offered great views of the city and the shopping in the surrounding streets was nothing short of manic!!! With a reasonably priced veggie restaurant in the Lonely Planet (guide book), their was no guessing where we would spend lunchtime - we were both glad we did - it was excellent. With our bus at 9:30pm we killed time in a huge bookstore,...

Jul 12, 2008 - Sao Paulo, Brazil

Woohoo, we~ve finally made it to South America - if only it wasn~t to the concrete jungle of Sao Paulo. Ben is very happy because its considerably cooler here, and im happy cause none of my summer clothes are clean - must find laundromat - theres only so much hand washing you can do! We are staying in a fantastic hotel with free internet and delicious breakfast (first scrambled eggs in months, and freshly squeezed orange juice). Other than that I don~t think i can really sell Sao Paulo ... tomorrow we are going to check out a snake farm...

Jun 22, 2008 - Day 7: Travel Day and Night

The night before we left for the falls, we returned to our room to get our things together. I was sitting on the bed when I heard a loud scream from the bathroom. The next thing I knew, Jill was on top of my bed yelling about the biggest bug she had ever seen that tried to attack her in the bathroom. I would like to say that I was brave and tried to kill the bug myself. However, I also found myself on top of the bed screaming when the monster crawled out from the bathroom. Eventually, I asked the group of large men that were staying in the...

Jan 31, 2008 - BRAZIL - Sao Paulo

The 12 hour bus journey - our last overnight journey of the trip - we arrived in Sao Paulo, one of the largest cities in the world with an estimated population of around 17 million. Our first taste of the city was in the taxi 2 minutes out of the bus station... as we approached an overpass, 3 armed police chased after a man, pulling their guns on him and physically subduing him (ie digging him in the ribs several times). Welcome to Sao Paulo. We only had a day to explore the city but we managed to get a feel for it and actually quite...

After check out we headed straight to the airport to catch our flight with Gol to Sao Paulo. The flight was quite good, much better than Ryanair for sure ! Basically we spent the day at Sao Paulo airport and found out later on that South African's Business Class to Johannesburg is overbooked, so we were accepted in Economy. They put us in a row with more legroom though so the 11 hrs-flight was quite manageable.
