Mar 13, 2012 - Company Visits in Sao Paulo - Day 2

Today, we woke up early for our next round of company tours. First we headed to Natura, the Brazilian leading manufacturer and marketer of skin care, cosmetics, perfume and hair care products. Natura uses a model similar to Avon, and has over 800,000 "consultants" throughout countries in Central and Latin America. Natura focuses on being eco-friendly, sustainable and socially conscious. 10 years ago, the Ekos product line was launched. The Ekos line has created 16 products from the biodiversity of Brazil. 1714 families are involved in the...

Mar 12, 2012 - Company Visits in Sao Paulo - Day 1

We woke up early to begin our first day of company visits. First, we headed to Demarest & Almeida, one of the largest and oldest law firms in Brazil whose clients include GE and Citibank. The law firm provided a great overview on how the government regulates business and how to incorporate a company in Brazil. The length of time to set up a company in Brazil was shocking. To incorporate a company and obtain all necessary enrollments it can take anywhere from two months to a year and a half. The lawyer's presentation hit home as at my own...

Mar 11, 2012 - Cultural Exploration in Sao Paulo

After catching up on some rest and getting an early morning jog in, I headed to lunch with a few classmates. In most cultures, English is spoken by everyone even if it's not the native language. I realized ordering lunch on my own for the first time, that this was not the case in Brazil. Very few Brazilians speak English (my guess would be 5%) and there was quite a large language barrier. As this was our day to explore the culture of Sao Paulo, I found a group of classmates that were interested in going to see a soccer game with me....

Mar 10, 2012 - Arrival to Sao Paulo, Brazil

We touch down in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Once we drop off our bags at the hotel, we have a group lunch at Amineira. At lunch I decide to order a Caipirinha, Brazil's national cocktail. It's made with cachaca (sugar cane rum), sugar and lime. I think to myself that for a country to have a national cocktail, they must really value their work-life balance. Following lunch, we take a tour though the Central part of Sao Paulo. We see a number of beautiful churches and walk through the Liberdade neighborhood, the Japanese-community in Sao Paulo....

Dec 14, 2011 - Sao Paulo

Hey all!! So after my adventures in Salvador I flew to another of Brazil´s famous cities... Sao Paulo. SP is bid, and I mean really big. My flight got in at around midnight so on the way in you could look out at the never ending carpet of lights. All this made me wonder how, exactly, I could decide what to do on my one day there. Fortunately the following morning I took advice from the receptionist in my hostel. Unlike Salvador SP has a very efficent, clean and (most importantly) safe metro system, making it easy to get around the city. I...

Dec 5, 2011 - ready to go home

What lunatics book a 6am flight on a day when they also have to take a flight at 11pm? We left the hotel in Iguassu so early, we missed the delicious breakfast which was included in the night's stay. We brought two carry-ons and a suitcase to check, but on this flight the carry-ons were too heavy even though they were exactly the same on the flight here. Luckily they zip apart and I had to part with half of mine after Ken moved some goodies into it. We are flying home tonight and I worried a bit that one or the other case would not appear,...

Dec 2, 2011 - the guide said nothing

The ship docked in Santos about an hour and a half drive from Sao Paolo on a cool and rainy day very much like the day in Lisbon when this cruise began. Sao Paolo a city of eleven million residents, is described as a city that tourists who don’t speak Portuguese would not enjoy visiting. Even the Brazilian cruise staff from other towns, rolled their eyes and talked about how it took them a while to get over the traffic, noise and pollution and enjoy the city. Many of our fellow travelers had flights home today that left after 11pm; that...

Oct 21, 2011 - Flying up to Rio

Well, you'll just have to excuse the adaptation of this classic film title. I seem to remember that one of the scenes involved girls dancing on the wings of a plane. Brenda, aka Ginger Rogers, resisted any attempt of mine to imitate the original choreography and remained firmly anchored to her seat. Perhaps this was not surprising as we awoke to our alarms, that had, this time, been correctly set to 0330 to give us an hour to prepare for the 0430 hotel pickup. All went 'swimmingly', to continue the 1930s tone, until a certain person...

Sep 1, 2011 - Cidada De Sao Paulo

I once had a friend who had been to SP and lived in Mexico city comment that he loved that Chicago was a small city. At the time the comment seemed a little outrageous, especially because my definition of a large city before going to Chicago was the Denver metro area. Well, now I know what he was talking about, compared to SP, Chicago is a small town. The view from the airplane of the city was a little overwhelming for me for a moment. Large buildings rising above incredibly underdeveloped areas or what looked to be more affluent areas....

Aug 14, 2010 - End of trip summary

Trip summary.  I'm on the bus to the airport which means I only have a few hours before I'm on the plane to Mexico city. Then I'm to las Vegas then to San Francisco where mom picks me up. I'm sitting on the bus thinking about my trip and how being home will be. The first shocker which almost made me cry was the thought that I have to go through customs in las Vegas. Customs are a pain in the but and I'm not going to lie, I've never had to clAim something like 7 bottles of wine. Well that's not a big deal but I was thinking about it and hard...
