... Florianopolis. Bit of a tongue twister that one. The best thing about Porto Allegre actually turned out to be Anderson, and he's not there anymore. So we only stayed one night and then headed on up to Florianopolis (via three buses and most of the day). Defintiely the right decision though. The things you think of when you imagine Brazil... the land of white sand beaches, crystal blue waters, samba, caipirinhas... its spot on. Florianopolis is amazing, we want to go back... definitely a contender for favourite place so far. The city...

Dec 3, 2007 - Florianopolis

From Curitiba once again by bus to Florianopolis. This is where Vicki's nephew lives, He is at the University here studying Engineering and Environmental Studies. We are staying in an excellent Pousada/Kitchenette with breakfast thrown in. We walk 10 minutes over sand dunes to the mighty Atlantic to a beach at least 10 miles long with approx. seven people, including us, on it. Huge rollers pounding the miles of sand. Oct 17, 2007 - Ilha da Santa Catarina (& Florianopolis)

Aarrgghh! (is how we felt when we got to Floripa!) - it's a HUGE city, and after all our small towns it scared us (we forgot that we lived in London!!). The city itself was big and mostly pretty ugly (we quite liked Beira Mar, and had delicious açai sucos there - but even there we saw a cockroach and a rat by the sea!!). We ran to the island part as soon as we could (the next morning), to a fishing village and a lovely little apartment. The island is gorgeous, and big, and has tons to do.
