Feb 17, 2013 - Rio Second Time Around
‘Head southeast toward Avenida Vinte de Janeiro’, Helen, as I call my Google Maps navigation lady. (I considered calling her Olive, who also likes to give instructions while I drive, but that is more on how, not where) I am heading off the lot of Movida car rental on Rio de Janeiro-Galeão International Airport, and it is not immediately clear what direction is southeast and which of the roads in front of me is the Avenida she refers to, but I do find the right one. ‘Continue straight onto Avenida Vinte de Janeiro ’. I have just flown in...Jump to full entry
Feb 15, 2013 - Vila Germanica: Blumenau
“Do you also serve espresso coffee?”, I ask the waiter, who walks up to me when I enter the Wunderwald restaurant, ”Entschuldigen Sie bitte, aber wir servieren jetzt nur das Mittagsessen”, he answers. So they do speak German only in the Wunderwald restaurant. Maybe the ‘Trachten‘ of the waitresses and the ‘Lederhosen’ he and the accordion player are wearing, should have prepared me, but it still is a bit of a surprise that he does it without any hesitation or caveat in response to my English. “Können Sie mir bitte sagen wo ich denn jetzt...Jump to full entry
So far, Brazil is pretty much what you can expect it to be: beautiful beaches, surrounded by small, cool hostels, big waves and surfers, and...how could I forget, the G-strings! Lots and lots and G-strings and booty, big and small booties, all in G-strings. I feel very much over-dressed. Even the guys wear micro-shorties, I tried to get one for Tim but he says he doesn't want to make the others jealous. But anyway, I spent most of time looking at the women, much more interesting, trying to figure out who has got surgery and who is natural....Jump to full entry
Mar 15, 2011 - Getting Ready!
As you can see we are going to try to keep an online journal of our trip. If you are interested in following us, check in every now and then.
This entry is just to test out the site and see how to work it.
We will try to write in both English and Português and sometimes Español, but it may not always be possible (due to time restraints) to write in each language. So please bookmark google translator :)
We will be leaving on the 19th for Lima, Peru!
So check back around then!
Hope all are well!
Oi! Vamos tentar...
Oct 13, 2010 - Florianopolis via Curitibo
8 am bus out of Sao Paulo. S.P. is, as Bon says, 'Just like LA', traffic congestion, rush hour, and sprawling city...the skyline even looks like LA. An hour and a half on the bus and we are just leaving the city proper! It's a nice sunny, cool, spring day with none of the pollution associated with LA tho (this may be due to S.P. excellent/extensive Metro system). Many Brazilians said they thot S.P. dirtier than Rio but from what I saw I thot Rio was overall much less well kept up other than the tourist areas and the coast. The wall...Jump to full entry
Jul 11, 2010 - Tucano House .... Our House
After seeing the entire country depressed with Brazil getting beaten and a grueling 24 hour cross country journey involving a bus, 2 planes, and an overnight coach we arrived in sunny Floripa. The scenery of this beautiful island was in stark contrast to our previous setting, and the best thing of all ...... not a drop of rain in sight!!! After taking 2 more painless bus rides we arrived at our destination for the night, Tucano House hostel. After a friendly welcome and a big breakfast we decided to venture to one of the numerous beaches...Jump to full entry
Apr 1, 2010 - One More Night in Floripa
We have spent the last week in one of my favourite places Ever...none of us wanted to leave Florianopolis. The slogan of Backpacker's Sharehouse (the hostel we stayed in) is ONE MORE NIGHT (they actually have this painted on the wall) because everyone always stays longer than they plan to. We arrived absolutely shattered after a horrible 16 hour bus journey from Iguazu, definitely the worst so far. But the bright sunshine, insane beaches and the pancakes AND cheese toasties that the hostel serves for breakfast managed to cheer us up fairly...Jump to full entry
Jan 26, 2010 - Florianopolis begins
After leaving Buenos Aires, we got a 17 hour overnight bus to Iguazu...expected to be a nightmare, but it was surprisingly luxurious! We had fully reclining seats, were waited on hand and foot throughout the journey, and had a better nights sleep than we had had in any bed on the trip so far! Iguazu was absolutely BEAUTIFUL! On the first day we just checked into the hostel, chilled by the pool etc, and then had an all-you-can eat BBQ for only 30 pesos (the equivalent to 10 pounds), after which we were taken by surprise when an EXTREMELY...Jump to full entry
Jan 4, 2010 - Florianopolis
Last night, I had to pack. Packing sucks because I have so much stuff that I need for different parts of my trip. Basically, there is only one way I can get everything to fit in my bag, so I spend hours packing and repacking. My bad karma from my past life (this is what most Brasilians would say) decided to kick in last night when the power went off in all of Curitiba. In South America, workers don´t rush out to fix it right away, and instead they just wait for the morning. So, I had to pack with only the light from my headlight strapped...Jump to full entry
Dec 7, 2009 - Florianópolis (Brazil)
I was very excited about getting to the coast of Brazil. I was looking forward to ´soaking up some rays´on the beach and seeing for myself the bikini wearing Brazilian women, about whom I had heard nothing but good things! I wasn´t disappointed! I travelled here with a group from Australia. The bus stopped for dinner and one of the Australians was halfway through eating some form of meat sandwich when he spat his food everywhere and ran off to be sick. We looked at his sandwich and there were maggots wriggling about inside the meat. Now...Jump to full entry
Sep 6, 2009 - Florianopolis, Brazil
4 weeks portuguese classes. Arrive from Porto Alegre. 6.5 hours, $14. From what I can tell, the only language school in Floripa is this one, Step 1. They only start on the 14th and 28th of September, which means that I should probably do one week of individual courses before hand since I would arrive on or around the 6rd. - so I don't have to wait that long to start. Its 395 for group classes and 490 for individual ones for the first week, and then that drops to about 350 group and 400 individual by the 4th week.Jump to full entry
Feb 4, 2009 - Florianopolis
OK, So 5 days on the beach in Florianopolis, on the isla de Santa Catarina. We are spending big time now, way out of my comfort zone. 140 Reals / $70 per night on accomadations. But it is a decent room, with running water, overlooking the beach, even though the beach is about a 1KM away across some dunes. I have been surfing the last two days. Although I am not as good as I remember!! Wehave been eating decent food at best. I remember Brazil not having exceptional food. Tomorrow we go for fejuaoda which is a BRazilian bean buffet. I know...Jump to full entry
