Jul 19, 1989 - Sugar Loaf Mountain

WEDNESDAY 19th JULY This morning we headed straight for Sugar Loaf Mountain. It was a lovely, warm, sunny morning. We took the cable car to the first stage, which is actually another mountain by the side of Sugar Loaf, but only half the height. The views were super and there were gift shops and snack bars. TUESDAY 18th JULY After extensive enquiries we discovered that to change money, we would have to go to a particular bank in the city centre, Banco de Brasil, so after a delicious breakfast in the nearest square, we checked into a new hotel, much nicer than the first, and set off walking to town. The book was wrong again. We discovered that by walking around a very attractive lagoon, we could reach Ipanema Beach. It took about an hour but it was quite...

Jul 16, 1989 - Flight to Rio

SUNDAY 16th JULY The flight to Rio was at 9.30 a.m. and so we were up early and in the hotel lobby by 7.30 a.m. waiting for a taxi which had been ordered the night before. When the taxi had still not arrived at 7.50, we began to be a little worried. It was a long drive to the airport. Cath and Lynn walked out to the main road, but the best they could find was a very "beat up" old Volkswagon. We piled the five of us plus our luggage in as best we could, and arrived at the airport at 8.30. All was well until it was time for Susan to check in....
