Sep 25, 2012 - Nearing our Journeys End

Ok!!! So??? Where do I start???? Let’s start in Florida. I believe most of you know our intentions for going to Florida was to bear near Miami’s Brasilian Consulate to fly out of Orlando or Miami to go to Brasil in July or August of 2012. We also despise cold weather. Never again will I ever live in an area in temps below 50 degrees F. My first winter in CA was in 2003. The last was 2011. 2012 was in Florida at a Wildlife Management Area. We left the Management area in March for Orlando to start downsizing our possessions. This was the...

Mar 20, 2009 - BACK TO NY SOON

Our hiatus to Brasil to avoid the cold weather is ending soon. I will be leaving with mixed emotions. I am now having a love affair with two countries (how fortunate). My treasured banana tree will be yielding bananas while I'm in the USA. The papays will ripen in 2-3 months-- Lina's sisters will enjoy. On the 24Th we board Tam flight jj3841 to Brasilia--then flight jj3583 to Sao Paulo. These flights take us over three and a half south nearly 2000 miles further from the USA. Arriving in Sao Paulo at 9:20 PM, we will have until 11.55 to...

Feb 26, 2009 - BRASIL

2-20 Our beach trip began at 3:30 AM-- much too early for me to awaken. After some early morning coffee, I carried all of our luggage and equipment to the front door. Lina’s sister, Amparo, was to arrive at 5:00PM . Upon her arrival we loaded the car and traveled to the outskirts of the city to await Bento, Amparo’s husband and Rachel, their daughter. They arrived soon after. Both cars then proceeded 100 kilometers to Campo Maior to have breakfast and pickup Bento’s niece,GEORGIA, and her boyfriend, ZEKE. Then it was time to travel the...

Feb 8, 2009 - Visit To Sitio Portugal

Yesterday we were the guests of Lina's elementary school friends, Jose and Maria. They picked us up at 7:30 AM in their 4x4 Toyota pickup for the 15 mile trip to their farm. Knowing it would be a great opportunity for some new pics, I purchased new batteries for the camera and loaded them before we went. The farm is about three miles from the main road (a nice paved highway)on a secondary road (dirt, mud and full of potholes). The foliage along the route was lush and very green due to all the recent rain storms. * * The farm house is...

Jan 26, 2009 - BRASIL BRAZIL

WOW!!! It seems impossible that we have been in Brasil for four months. Time has rapidly 'flown by'. I have the Elmira, NY weather station on my tool bar and I can see NY has had a very severe winter thus far. In talking with my son, he said it may not thaw out until AUGUST. If this comes true, those of you who suggested a bit of 'envy' at our being here in the warmth consider this: I am now cold at 78 degrees-- think about had difficult it is going to be for us to acclimate to the NY weather. I have finally fully recovered from my over...

Jan 13, 2009 - New Years And Birthday Parties

The New Years party started at 11:30 PM on New Years Eve. ALL the family and there friends were in attendance. It seemed like the Christmas party had never ended and this was a continuation of that party. I had several glasses of excellent Brasilian red wine and two classes of bubbly at midnight. The feast stated at about two and we headed home at 5:30. I never woke up on New Years day until 2:30 in the afternoon. 1/04 Today is Mama's 94th Birthday and of course it's party time. The food was too plentiful but oh so delicious. The roasted...

Dec 28, 2008 - Brasil Brazil Brasil

So much has happened since the last entry, it is difficult to know where to commence. We have had several good and much needed rain. Storms so far have all been electrical. One storm caused power outage for eight hours. It is almost intolerable for me to exist here without air conditioning. I can last for four to five hours then it to off the AC. Christmas was several trips to the mall-- A most fantastic Christmas Eve at Lina's sister. It is amazing to me that Lina's family being as large as it is has no 'down time' caused by bickering,...

Dec 19, 2008 - Summer In Teresina,paui, Brasil

The excuse for my being remiss in entering info in My Trip Journal can be blamed on those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. We have been doing the party party since Thanksgiving and it looks like it's not stopping until after Mardi Gra.--Averaging about two a week The weather ranges from the mid 80's to the low 100's. We had several good rains this month. One 8 hour stint without electric was not at all comfortable ---no AC or ref --bad news. We have been roaming the Malls on the north side of the river(the ritzy side). They are...

Nov 24, 2008 - Brasil Brazil Brasil Brazil---party Party

YESTERDAY WAS PARTY TIME AT OUR HOUSE. It was Lina's Birthday. Food was too abundant and oh so delicious. Of course,as usual, I over ate. The Minister and his wife from our church were here for the party as well as all the family and friends about 25 of all together. Since Brasil does not celebrate Thanksgiving this event will suffice for that day as well. Lina's sister has a birthday Dec.10 so I need to rest up for that party. Then 15 days later it's Christmas. Christmas is a big celebration in Brasil. Never guessed I would end up being...

Some how I managed to break all the promised to lose some weight by eating some of each dessert. if this trend continues. I'll need to stay in Brasil since the airplane seat will not fit my...

Oct 25, 2008 - Brasil Brazil Brasil Brazil Brasil

Seems hard to believe, but as you can notice there are only 5 Brasils in the title.. That means one month has passed since we left the USA. I am working at learning Portuguese. I have gotten to the point where I convinced myself that I can do it- before I believed I couldn't. Several new friends are helping with the endeavor. We have met many awesome people here. Our neighbor, four business men and many church people. It goes without saying that Lina's family is extra extra fantastic. They are kind, generous, and loving people. It is very...

Oct 4, 2008 - CAMPO MAIOR

Traveled to Campo Maior to farm of Lina's sister and brother in law. Trip of about 70 miles northeast of Teresina. Surprising the number of Crazy LA drivers down here-- passing on double solid lines-- blind curves--horn crazy-- non caring--reckless drivers. It is also awesome how big those tractor trailers look when you are in a small car. Thanks to the tolerance and patience of our driver, Lina's sister, we arrived at one large festive family gathering of 25 plus people with food enough for fifty. I drank copious amounts of caju juice and...
