Jan 23, 2007 - Ilha Grande

Hello my friends. At last I have some time, energy & an internet connection all at the same time & I can update you on my travels so far. As you can see we have now moved on from Rio and have made our way down to a rain-forest covered island a couple of hours travel south of Rio. This is the stuff dreams are made of: a mountainous island covered in forest and surrounded by tiny bays & beaches. We are staying in a hostel in the islands only village which is basically made up of campsites, hostels and pousadas (guesthouses), plus places to...

Aug 10, 2006 - Even I can spot a kingfisher now

We spent a day at the falls and then took an internal flight to the city of Cuiaba which has little to recommend it, it would appear, aside from its close proximity to the Pantanol which is a protected area (I think about the size of Wales or something) to the south of the city. Not really knowing what to expect (is this becoming a common theme in my blogs), as I had never really heard of the Pantanol before, I was absolutely amazed by the incredible amount of wildlife there. It really was like being in the middle of your own wildlife...

Aug 7, 2006 - Arrival of Lia and Graham!

The day finally arrived, six months after leaving home we finally had familiar faces to look at and old friends to chat to in person. Lia and Graham arrived on the 8am flight from London and the sun was shining in Brazil to greet them. We got a bus into town and brought them directly to the apartment we've rented for the week...the normality of having a place to call home is a magnificent treat for myself and Linda. The apartment is in Ipanema, three blocks from the beach. We've the use of a pool, sauna, jacuzzi and a gym in the apartment...

Nov 16, 2005 - Brasilian Coastline

-Maresias, Ilha Bela, Trindade, Parati, Angra dos Ries, Ilha Grande! Rented a car for a week and drove outta Sao Paulo. Going up the coastline in route to Rio. Although we seem to get lost in every little town we come to, it is a really beautiful drive and the islands and beaches along the way are super cool. Will try and post some pics soon. Update: The weather went to crap so we decided to head to Rio a little sooner. . . . -H Paul's pics are coming...

Lima to Rio

Mar 10, 2005 - Brazil

After taking my time in Ecuador and Argentina, I was somewhat squashed for time in Brazil. I only had six days so I decided to limit myself to Rio and try to see it properly instead of rushing around various places for only a day or two. I contacted another guy through Couch Surfing, one of the traveller community websites I had been using. He didn't have time to hang out with me, but he did have an apartment on Copacabana beach that was empty at the time and he gave me the key so I could stay for a couple of days. It was in an amazing...

Feb 14, 2005 - Not another valentines day on my own!

Just realised what the date is, although fortunately it doesn´t seem to be a big thing in brazil. If i don´t meet a handsome brazilian in the next 5 and a half hours i think it´s gonna be another valentines night on my own. Pull out the violins everyone. I am now in a little town 4 hours south of Rio on called Parati (thanks to jane for recommendation). It is a lovely old port town like something out of a graham greene novel. All steamy tropical heat, cobbled streets, whitewashed buildings and that slight tropical smell of rotting and decay...

Jan 30, 2005 - Ilha Grande

From Paraty we caught a bus and boat to Ilha Grande. The weather was fantastic and the boat trip was gorgeous. Ilha Gandde is the largest island of hundreds of islands scattered along the Emerald Coast. We love this place!!! We were very lucky with the weather and after many days of rain the weather was fantastic with only a little rain in the evening or early morning. On our first day we walked the 2.5-3 hr journey to Lopez Medez - rated one of the best beaches in the world! Most of the track was through the jungle on some very slippery...

Dec 25, 2004 - Christmas on the Island

While having a white Christmas, meaning lots of sand, was totally new for Chris, he adapted quite well. We spent a few days at Ihla Grande an island not too far from Rio. Despite some nighttime storms and flickering power, we had a really nice time. There was plenty of island to explore, and lots of sunshine did make it through. Here`s a couple of pix. A

Apr 30, 2004 - Rio part 2

We've spent about a week in the city of Rio De Janeiro. It's definetly a unique place. We spend our time at the beach, site seeing and partying. The statue of Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redemer) is a breathtaking experience from the top. One of the greatest views our eyes have ever seen. The weather here this time of year is perfect (about 80) if its not raining. We did a hike of Parque Nacional Da Tijuca, just inland from Rio. It's filled with waterfalls, hiking trails and dense forest. Our transportation is almost all buses along with...
