Founded at the end of the 17th century, Ouro Preto (" Black Gold" ), was the focal point of the gold rush and "Brazil's Golden Age" in the 18th century. The town is set on top of a hill, and is surrounded by hills, which makes it a nightmare for the tourists trying to troop round and see all 14 of it`s baroque churches! The question as to why there are so many churches in such a small town is because the town had a much bigger population during the gold rush days.
