Nov 26, 2006 - Okavango Delta

Early morning start. Picked up at 7:30am and transported for about 2hrs along sandy tracks to where the canoes were waiting. The canoes were about 15ft long by 2ft wide. Stable, not sure. Our guides name was Brian (nice Botswanain name that is). Think he was stoned. I went in the canoe with Ed and felt a little wobbly. We canoed for for a couple of hours and arrived at our camp. The camp was under some trees with a fire in the middle. Set up camp, had lunch then relaxed to the point of sleeping for a couple of hours. Just really nice to be...

Aug 29, 2006 - The Okavango Delta

From Maun airport, took a scenic flight into the Okavango Delta - well worth the extra fee - to get to a place where Drifters keeps a few bush trucks, then drove for about 45 minutes on very rough bush roads to the mokoro station. Mokoros are the dug-out canoes use by the locals in the Delta. It is really the only way to travel through the Delta. Then, a 45 min. mokoro ride to the camp - unbelieveable beauty, peace, and privacy! The Okavango is a river that flows into the NorthWest of Botswana, and quickly spreads out into many 'fingers'...

Feb 12, 2006 - Botswana and Okavango Delta

Now we have rain again, and it has affected the journey. The pleasures of Africa. Moved along Caprivi Strip, hoping to cross into Botswana, but road was closed for some time due to a severely muddy and flooded road. Eventually got through, via Mahango Game Reserve - this is a real back water border crossing. Thankfully an english guy living in Skakawe helped us through in his 4WD, with a tow when we got stuck! Then down to the Panhandle of the Okavango Delta. Our drives up north have been very much different from south Namibia - seems...

Dec 31, 2005 - Okavango Delta Day 14-16 Overland

Day 14 - 16 Overland: Okavango Delta From Rundu, we barely managed to cross the border from Namibia to Botswana. It had been raining, and the only access to Botswana from Rundu was flooded. We were desperately hoping to get across so we can visit the amazing Okavango Delta. Todd, our guide, sadly told us that our Delta trip would most likely be cancelled if we weren't able to cross. It was still sprinkling when we reached the 20 km stretch of road. With our fingers crossed, we pushed ahead. Our 18-ton truck fishtailed wildly in the mud,...

Sep 28, 2005 - Okavango Delta, Botswana

Two hours over a very rough road followed by a two hour boat trip upriver took us to the swampy inland delta region. We travelled on mokoros (boats hollowed out of tree trunks) throgh the dense papyrus poled upstream by a local family. Crikey it was hot, I wouldn't have been surprised if it was touching 40 degrees celsius, only my feet were exposed and they were not liking it. We camped in a small clearing on a small patch of land near to the river. This time we were going bush. The toilet was a hole in the ground and if you fancied a cool...
