Nov 12, 2009 - Belize it or Not
After seeing through Hurricane Ida in Cancun quite merrily (thanks to an all inclusive full of Caribbean rum), we headed quickly for the Belize border. Another short hop took us down to Caye Caulker, a smaller and more chilled out version of the more popular beach town where the streets were of palm-lined sand and bikes were the most common vehicle. ... The last skirmish on the Guatemala-Belize border was in February 2000 when a Guatemalan was shot by a Belize Defence Force border patrol. I find one in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. ... If Belize City is the epitome of the shadowy sides of Caribbean life, the Cayes certainly represent the sunny side and San Pedro on Ambergris Caye (La Isla Bonita in Madonna’s song, according to some, and they are not trying to deny that on the island), has that relaxed ‘sunny beach, waving palms and cool breeze’ charm. ... It was the perfect spot for my last few days in the region, reading a book and generally lazing through the day (except for a few appointments with bank people of course - in case you were wondering why I stopped over). The last skirmish on the Guatemala-Belize border was in February 2000 when a Guatemalan was shot by a Belize Defence Force border patrol. To say that it had been a long trip “home” from Cuba to Mexico would be an understatement – we’d left Maria and Rafaele, our friendly hosts in Havana at 4 o’clock in the morning on 9 June, and eventually arrived in Caye Caulker, Belize the following lunch time. “The Eater” as Holley has affectionately been named, didn’t quite know what to do with himself after not eating for 4 meals, and T, to her own admission was so hot and bothered she totally forgot to feel seasick on the 45 minute ferry trip from Belize City to Caye Caulker – all in all, morale was a little low! But oh was it worth it. ...

BELIZE, Caye Caulker (Teneale) After travelling for 30 hours from Cuba we were exhausted and we picked the perfect place to relax for a couple of days, Caye Caulker! Caye Caulker, is an island off the coast of Belize, where the island's motto is "GO SLOW"! I had to laugh as I was frequently told to "go slow" as I paced typical "Teneale style" through the sandy streets! To accurately set the scene of the island, think of an island about 4km long and 200m wide, think beach sand streets where the vehicle of choice is golf carts, think beach roads lined with little beach bars and fruit sellers, think of the perfect place to lose yourself and that is Caye Caulker. ... John was a particular fan of Half Moon Caye as there are the endemic red-footed boobies (it is a type of bird!)! To top it last, at our last dive spot, we were treated to a turtle who kindly let us follow him for 100m and we even got as close as 1m as it came up to breathe! As we hesitantly left Caye Caulker, there are a many special memories that stand out for us: * Our morning runs and gym sessions on the beach, including me having to run 3 laps of the island to get to 10km and the boys being chased by the airport security dogs! * Watching the sunset each evening on the Caribbean from our hammock which was literally 10m from the shoreline. ... * The fruit sellers who we visited at least twice a day for fresh mango and papaya shakes.BELIZE, Caye Caulker (Teneale) After travelling for 30 hours from Cuba we were exhausted and we picked the perfect place to relax for a couple of days, Caye Caulker!
