Mar 11, 2014 - To Belize

Time to leave Mexico today and head to Belize. So after breakfast we caught a taxi to the bus station. There was a bit of kerfuffle on the bus as there were too many people on the bus. Eventually sorted after they found a couple of girls were on the wrong bus. That sorted, we were on our way for a five hour ride. The bus was quite modern and comfortable with TV and toilet on board. They had an English movie on with Spanish subtitles, so I left the sound off and "read" the movie to help with my spanish. Managed to follow most of the movie so...

Sep 7, 2011 - Go slow... you might break your toe :)

6th-8th Sept Caye Caulker, moto "Go Slow" I loved this island the moment I stepped off the boat, palm trees, hammocks, sun sea and the friendliest people you will ever meet. To get here we had our first boarder crossing at Chetumal from Mexico to Belize. Our bags were sniffed by scary dogs and army men with big guns, it was fairly drama free considering some horror stories we've heard about boarder crossings. The boat ride to Caye Caulker was bumpy and uncomfortable and the boat which was descibed to us as a luxury vessel, similar to an...

Jun 2, 2011 - Hurricane Season

Hey ho, So since I last wrote we decided to stay here at Caye Caulker due to the fact that it is amazing and partly because we're lazy. I managed to hunt down a salon (aka hut) where I could get an all-important eyelash-tint. But I think that was just codename for a Chinese torture method. At least it made me realise the value of a 24 hour patch test! And now Helen's happy that I'm not moaning about pale eyelashes all day! We hired kayaks one day, actually it was just one kayak- a double- so we paddled in tandem- very romantic, I know! The...

May 29, 2011 - Made it!

So we made it (finally!) after many trains, one missed plane (on my part!), three flights and a boat (hurrah!) Fortunately, because I missed a plane, I managed to get on the same Heathrow to NY flight as Helen! Camped out at JFK and then chased breakfast all the way to Belize via Miami (time kept going backwards so we had multiple!) Belize is cool. Like how I imagined Mexico- proper scorching too (so nice!) We rocked up at the water taxi and got the boat to the island where we are (so not Caye Corker but Caye Caulkner!) It's like...

Jan 28, 2010 - CAYE CAULKER

Following the day from hell where we left Tulum at 4 am, 12 hours, several buses and a ferry later we eventually arrived on an island 1 hour away from Belize city called Caye Caulkner. We immediately got a really good feel for this place which has to be one of the most laid back and chilled out places we have been to. I suspect the chilled out vibe may well be something to do with the amount of dope everyone seemed to smoke at any hour of the day, but still! You can’t really go anywhere in Belize without being offered any dope, we were...
