May 10, 2017 - Belize - Liberty and Sights

I was up early again this morning and down for devotions. I met Christine in restaurant for breakfast then we went to our room and got ready for our tour. We met some of our group in the showroom where we were allocated to a tender. We chatted while we waited and eventually we went down to the boat. The tenders here are quite different from the ones we have seen on other ships. Mostly we have seen them use the lifeboats as tenders, but here they contract with a local company to supply larger boats that ferry the passengers back and forth....

Feb 15, 2017 - Belize

Arrived 8 am and departed 4:15 pm. We anchored a long way from shore, and had to take a tender that took at least 15 minutes. We took the Lamanai Mayan Ruins and River Boat Safari tour. Our tour guide was Elvis and he talked nonstop the whole air-conditioned (modern)bus ride to the boat. The ride was through the scenic Belize River Valley. He shared local history and information and was full of energy. He pointed out historic villages which were the original settlements of the colony of British Honduras, along the way. Belize is the only...

Feb 21, 2015 - Belize City

WE had our goodbye meal and I decided, with Bridget, to meet them for breakfast and goodbye's. Bridget is off to another island, San Pedro, and I was leaving later so I wouldn't be spending too much time in Belize. Another, and my last for a while, early rise at 6:15, breakfast at 7am then off to the dock to send them all off. I returned to the hotel for a shower and finish packing and around 9am, with nothing much more to do we went for another drink and sat at the quay waiting for my water taxi. Bridget was leaving 45 minutes later. The...

Feb 8, 2015 - 8 and 9 February Belize to Crooked Tree

Chad, the friendly owner of my hotel, tooke and another guy to the bus station and everything form there went well. By mid-day I was sitting in the Chateau Caribbean hotel with cake and coffee. Four of the group had arrived and by supper there were nine of us, another nine arriving by plane tomorrow morning. Two guys are Danish, others are UK. Everything was closed in the City being a Sunday so I just walked around the area and had a quick lunch on the jetty where the boats leave for the Cayes. In the evening we me up. Wilfrid is our Tour...

Feb 2, 2015 - Belize City, Belize.

We begin the day watching the many Tender boats coming to take us ashore. It is about a 20 minute trip into Belize City. The water is so clear and blue it is obvious we can't get any closer without risking going aground. The trip thru Belize City is not very exciting or even interesting. We do get a lot of info from our guides. But it is not too long into the trip that we find out the a/c has stopped working on the bus!! Before long we stop when a new bus has caught up to us and we make the switch. This one has a/c but is much more like a...

Belize and Cozumel

Jan 23, 2015 - Back to Belize City

After breakfast at the hotel I took a final walk around Placencia. It is a homey place. A lot of Americans seem to go there to drop out of life. We met the guy who owns our hotel. He's an old coger that still owns an animal hospital in Florida. He told us he has never worked so hard for so little pay in his life. You can start feeling sorry for him if you want, but I wouldn't. We saw him almost all of the time--morning, afternoon, and evening--sitting in the restaurant jawing with people, eating food from the kitchen, and occassionally...

The plane touched down at the only international airport in Belize. It is a single runway. After landing, we had to find a wide spot in the runway to turn the plane around and taxi back down the runway to the terminal building. Th building is reminiscent of the Long Beach Airport: one small building, stairs they wheel over to the plane, and nothing visible to keep one from just walking off into the woods. OK, I don't know that the last one describes Long Beach. Basilio and I crawled down the stairs and stepped aside so as not to get chopped...

Apr 24, 2014 - Belize City

I don't do that enough recently - got a new country today and effectively a new region with Central America. Could have had a nice turbo-prop flight across the bay but the boss's small plane phobia meant we took a 3 hour each way drive - still, the views on the drive were stunning too. Camera is kaput.

Jan 15, 2014 - Belize

During the night our ship sailed only 115 miles, from Roatan to Belize City. Most of our group had chosen to go snorkeling, while Marilyn & I opted for a tour of the Mayan Ruins and a River Cruise with a typical Belize meal for lunch. Our guide was descended from the Mayans and was very knowledgeable and we sure enjoyed her narrative. The ruins were reached after a lengthy bus ride and it began to rain as we approached the ruins. We purchased a thin, flimsy, plastic poncho, for $3.00 each, and that helped a little bit in keeping us...

Jan 8, 2014 - To Belize

Up at 6:30 AM and did morning stuff. Packed up all my gear and waited for the folks to stop by to get me for breakfast. I was feeling a little better but wasn’t too sure about breakfast. Definitely no tea… Well, about 8:30 everybody showed up – we were supposed to meet at Martin’s and I forgot. I guess a day dealing with the issues can have a negative effect on memory. I finally got to meet the new folks – Hans and Ema from Switzerland. He’s a landscape architect and she does chemical research on drugs. Nice folks – Ema has better English...

Dec 4, 2013 - Belize City, Belize Day 4 of Cruise!

For our 2nd 'pit stop' in Belize we had booked a private tour for a day of cave tubing after much research on Trip Advisor. Our tour was MUCH better than the cruise tour as they took us to caves further up and there were NO other tourists there! During the hike up to the caves we met a couple who own a dog kennel in Windsor, Nova Scotia. Go figure. You have to go to St. Thomas to meet fellow Nova Scotians but, it is a small world after all right? It was great having them along on our tour as they were able to help us take a few pics. It was...
