Apr 20, 2013 - Park and then Lier

It had rained on the Friday and so we had a quiet day in the coach. However Saturday dawned bright and sunny so we decided to head to the nearby park about five minutes walk from the stellplatze. Vogelenzang Park turned out to be a little treasure. As well as being a large and beautifully laid out park it also had a collection of sculptures, many dating to the early fifties or before. For once Heather had not taken her camera so could take any photos of the more interesting ones. It was a lovely walk which we all enjoyed and it was very...

Mar 1, 2009 - My Saturday and Sunday

It was a very nice weekend. I was able to go the the Square again with one of my the co-workers. We did a lot of walking. She brought some chocolates to bring back home. I'm going to go back to the same store and get some before I go back home. We looked for somewhere to each after we were thru shopping. We finally ended up at De Cirque. I had lasagne (that is how it is spelled here) with ham. It was different but tasted delicious! Sunday I finally learned how to use the dryer. And I also went to see 'Slum dog Millionaire' at the movies. It...

Feb 24, 2009 - Lunch at McDonalds

Today I thought that I had a meeting (actually it was training) at 8am. It was 8am MD time, not 8am Belgium time. The meeting was actually at 2pm Belgium time. Much better. But because of this confussion I didn't bring anything for lunch. So I went to McDonalds for lunch (see photos). I have almost finished my first assignment!!!! Don't know what is next. I have more training tomorrow (7am MD time, 1pm Belium time) for THREE hours. How fun! I really am learning about the company here (see pic of building). There are some great people who...

Feb 23, 2009 - Start of my Second week

Didn't get a chance to take any pics today. So here I go. Yesterday was a relaxing day. But I had to wash my first set of clothes. I thought that it was going to be easy, but I couldn't read the words by the bottons. I got the washer to work but I couldn't get the dryer to work. I had to hang my stuff up in my apartment to dry. Well, it is good that I didnt have much to dry. I will figure it out before I leave (hopefully). Today was work, again. Another person came in today. She will be with us for two weeks. Work is going good. Got lots of...

Feb 21, 2009 - My walk to the Mechelen Market Square

I sleep late and got up about 11am here (5am MD time). I went to the corner bakery first to return the basket that contained the welcome basket when I first got here. Then I started to go towards the square, which is about a 15 minute walk from the place that I am staying. The buildings are old (around 16th century). Mechelen is an important city. It was the capital of the Netherlands back in the 16th century. It is in the middle of the Flemish part of Belgium now. There are three parts of Belgium (Dutch, French and German). The Dutch is...

Feb 20, 2009 - One week over 4 to go

Finally made it here. Started working right away. There are a lot of people here. They speak Dutch, French and English (and some speak German). It was hard going to the store for the first time. I didn't understand any of the words. So I had to look at pictures or familiar brands. So I brought some macaroni, spaghetti sauce, butter, fruit cocktail. Some things are cheaper here. I brought a loaf of freash cut bread from the corner bakery for 2 euros (about $2.30) But a tube of lip gloss is 11 euros (too much). But first I had to get some...
