10/10/08 Friday (Today’s photos and those from some of the previous and subsequent days were inadvertently taken at a high ISO setting resulting in a lot of graininess on many of the photos. I’m probably more disappointed about this than you are!) We started the day on the south side of the city at Martyr’s Lane, a memorial to Bakuvians who died during the 1990 invasion of the Red Army. Apr 16, 2005 - Mud volcanoes in Qobustan

Depart: Sheiki, Azerbaijan Arrive: Qobustan, Azerbaijan Overnight: Bush camp - A pretty uneventful drive day until we arrived in Qobustan - just 60km from Baku. To see the mud volcanoes we had to drive offroad which meant an opportunity to sit in the truck's roof seats! It was bumpy, but we got a great view. - Before that - we had hit the best roads we had seen probably since Istanbul - that's what petrodollars can buy you! - We followed a rather sketchy map off road and navigated using pylons. Apr 16, 2005 - A Terra estah com flatulencia...

Camping a ~60 km de Baku, Azerbaijao "A Terra estah com flatulencia". Quase morri de rir com a descricao de Russ sobre o que presenciavamos. Uma especie de chocadeira de vulcoes. Vulcoezinhos com lama, ao inves de lava, expelem gases que fazem as bolhas de lama estourarem. Alguns deste vulcoezinhos, embora pequenos, eram intensamente ativos. Comico. O Azerbaijao eh um pais com caracteristicas geologicas bastante peculiares. Ao andar pelas planicies semi-aridas do lado do Mar Caspio, nao eh dificil ver piscininhas de petroleo a ceu aberto....
