May 30, 2018 - Innsbruck

We returned to the SEAT garage in Innsbruck but they said they could not do anything about the car until at the earliest the following week. We then rang the small garage in Seefeld we had first visited and they said they could have a look on Friday morning. As we were in Innsbruck we decided to re-visit. The last time we had been visited Innsbruck was in 2003. We enjoyed exploring this lovely city once again. The famous landmarks are the Golden roof, the Olympic Ski jump plus the lovely old town.

May 23, 2018 - In the mountains behind Innsbruck

We woke up to a beautiful day so we decided to head up the Hungerburg just behind Innsbruck. We headed up to the top station Hafelekar at 2,256m. As well as views of the Inn Valley the views of the mountains inland were outstanding. There was still significant snow at this level so there were limited walking opportunities. We headed down to the middle station Seegrube at 1905m and sat and ate our lunch watching a microlite flyer prepare and the take off. We the walked the Path of Perspectives although Tony found it a bit difficult as he...

Sep 16, 2017 - Innsbruck

Yesterday we drove to Lake Como....an upside down Y-shaped lake surrounded by houses with a town-Como-at one end. The setting is spectacular. From here we went to Switzerland driving along Lake Lugano and up the autoroute through equally spectacular scenery...jagged mountains, narrow canyons, magnificent waterfalls cascading from high up. The most amazing, I think, was San Bernadino where the pass was close to 3000 m. or more. From the lookout the snowshed that became a long tunnel was just up around the corner. We descended through a...

Sep 16, 2017 - Innsbruck

Our first destination in Austria was the city of Innsbruck. In truth we picked here as it was the easiest place to get to from Fussen and only had half a day to have a look around. Innsbruck has very much an alpine feel to it with many skills resorts dotted around Tyrol and alpine views from just about anywhere is the city itself. We had planned to go up a cable car to one of the mountains 2,300m above the city but as luck would have it the rains and low clouds came over when we arrived to scuppered our plans. With little else to do we had...

May 20, 2017 - From Lyon on May 20

9. May 20, 2017. Day 26. Yesterday 5/19 we rode up and down the Corniche in Cannes. Just beautiful. The Cannes Film Festival is on from May 17 to May 28 – we didn’t get to see any films but the beautiful people were in town -- we didn't even know the Film Festival was in town. But we know some of the movies--with Collin Farrell and one by Sofia Coppola--The Beguiled and The Killing of the Sacred Deer--by Yorgos Lanthimos and the Korean "Okja". The harbour was full of luxury yachts and the biggest cruise ship I have ever seen—The Epic—was...

May 18, 2017 - From Cinque Terra, Italy to Cannes, France

7. Wednesday May 17 Deiva Marina at the Hotel Arcbaleno Bagni On the Mediterranean Sea just north of Cinque Terra—we arrived here day before yesterday late in the day after a three hour drive from Florence. The road down from the A12 was another one-lane-down-hill-switchback-descent into the unknown. After a couple of drives through town we found the hotel—the people were lovely and couldn’t have been kinder or more helpful. They upgraded us to a sea view at no cost. (One the second day we had to move to a second sea view room due to a mix...

May 13, 2017 - From Venice to Florence and on the Cinque Terra

Now it is Monday evening May 8 and we leave tomorrow for Ravenna and then Florence for four days. We really had a great time in Venice. We went to the four museums associated with the Doge’s Palace, the palace, prisons and bridge of sighs. The Bibliotheca and the Archeological Museums. We went into San Marco’s Basilica. And many other churches small and large along the way. Janice has been taking religious instruction from me and is now read for a catechism. On day two we went to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection museum and the Academia....

May 8, 2017 - Venice--First day to Last

4. Today is Friday May 5th, 2017. Day 11. Yesterday around 10:30 we left Mauern for a four-hour drive to Venice. We drove the small roads, 182 through the Brenner Pass and we got on the autobahn in Italy. A4 where we made better time. The drive was beautiful through the Italian Alps and the Dolomite Mountains. The architecture changed from Tyrolean Austrian to Italian – the South Tirol area was historically disputed by the Habsburgs who claimed it and the Italians who received it after WWI in the break up of the Austria/Hungry Empire. We...

May 2, 2017 - Week One, Tuesday May 2, 2017 along the Brenner Pass in Austria

3. Tuesday May 2, 2017. We are in Mauern 83 near the Brenner Pass between Austria and Italy. We left Oy-Mittleberg this morning about 11:00 and drove for four hours though the German and Austrian Alps. Basically we drove from Fussen through the Fernpass to Innsbruck then on to Mauern. Nothing short of sensational. Again on this trip each hour of each day has something new and wonderful to see. Yesterday we visited Linderhof Palace—another of King Ludwig II’s abodes. Before that we were at Schloss Neuschwanstein & Castle Hohenschwngau both...

Jul 2, 2016 - Hohenschwangau Castle, Austrian Alps, Innsbruck Austria

Today we visited King Ludwig's childhood home, Hohenschwangau Castle. It is right across the way from Neuschwanstein Castle, which he had built for himself after he became King when he was 18 years old. We heard his childhood castle was a better tour so we did that one. Neuschwanstein is prettier from the outside as it is white and really stands out against the forested area surrounding it. This castle is the one the Disney Castle is modeled after. Hohenschwangau was very charming and not super extravagant like the other castles and palaces...
