Jan 17, 2012 - Day 11 - Feeling like a Beatle!!!

We're still in Steyr - this is our final evening here... and it's finally snowing!! We've had about three inches, maybe a little bit more - but somehow, the roads are clear BUT there isn't lots of horrible grey, oily slush in the gutters!?!?! Mind you I'm not complaining about English snow.... I LIKE THE FACT we can't get to work sometimes!!! Three show day yesterday in a beautiful little theatre... I MUST get a picture tonight... It's like a mini buxton Opera house!! Fell asleep for most of the afternoon again yesterday... But did later...

Jan 14, 2012 - Day 8 - "Time travelling to the 2nd world war era!!!"

Weather - Bloody freezing and snowy - although tending not to stick! Hotel: Mader - Visit the site by clicking here: Hotel Mader - English Site Translation Guten tag! Checked into our new hotel after a three hour drive. Hannah did the first hour and me the rest of the journey - had to drive through snow drifts and some heavy snow - none of which seemed to stick. The roads are really windy and driving isn't exactly the pleasant experience I was anticipating. Saying that it was my first trip as driver for all the cast - so maybe I was a bit...

Aug 7, 2011 - August 6-7 2011 Family Reunion pictures

We took it easy today as the Family Reunion started at 3 PM. The Reunion was held in a town called Seekirchen. There were about 140 people in attendance. Each of the family branches were introduced. Most of the speeches were in German however there were three cousins assigned to sit at the Canadian branch table to offer translation. It was much appreciated. The rest of the post is the related to the family reunion and the connections. I finally got a chance to meet Aunt Maria and Uncle Franz. These two were given up for adoption during the...

Aug 5, 2011 - Salzburg

Day 2. Salisburg Mondsee. So we got a good night sleep at Elinor's and Max's. We decided since it was going to be a fairly nice day that we would go to Berchtesgaden. I have always wanted to go there and it is fairly close. Berchtesgaden for those who don't know is the town where Hitler's henchman built the Eagles nest. The cost to go on the tour is quite expensive, but relative for what you get. It is a four hour tour explaining the site and the Hitler era in the area. 50 Euro per person We drove to Berchesgarden and as we got closer it...

Jun 6, 2011 - Hallstatt

This morning we were ready for another road trip rather than hitting the city streets. I have always wanted to visit Hallstatt based on the description in the Rick Steves book and the pictures I have seen. It is a small town on a lake near Salzburg. The hills in this area have dozens of alpine lakes, a network of roads winding through the hills connecting them. I think of this as the foothills of the Alps, but there are some pretty impressive peaks that are close. As you approach Hallstatt, the road goes into a long tunnel that actually...

Aug 13, 2009 - Vienna (Wien)

Thursday We awoke in anticipation of the city of Vienna , the capital of Austria and looked across to the new city from our ship balcony. Having travelled from the smaller cities of the north of Austria we caught the tour bus into the centre of the city Stephandom the highest and most aclaimed church in Austria. A church has stood on the site for over 800 years but the only remaining sections of the original 13th Century Romanesque church are the Giant;s Doorway and Heathen Towers. The Gothic nave choir and side chapels are the result of a...

Aug 12, 2009 - Salzburg

On our way this morning I photographed the first lock one of eleven that we will pass as we drop down through the different water levels of the Danube River. From an engineering perspective it was interesting to see the speed at which the ships pass through and sometimes go through side by side. The nights are often punctuated with the sound of creaking boards as the ship slides down the high side walls of the lock to the new water level. We faced a long drive from Linz where the ship berthed late last night to Salzburg the center eo...

Jun 3, 2009 - Cesky Krumlov to Salzburg, via Hallstatt

We had booked a shuttle with Sebastian Tours for the drive from Cesky Krumlov to Hallstatt, Austria. The van was pretty full, so Lia sat in front with the driver, and I sat in the backseat. The drive was beautiful. I saw several farmers out in their fields turning their hay by hand, which was cool. My camera batteries died just as we were getting into the mountains, though, so not many good pictures. The border between Czech Republic and Austria was noticeable due to the appearance of Gasthauses. The drive took about 3 hours. Upon our...

Oct 11, 2008 - Salzburg and the House of Mozart.

Since we spent the night in Vienna this was only a day trip. We found a place to rent bikes and soon made our way through the gardens though the old town. Salzberg sits in the Austrian Alps and is where the musical, The Sound of Music, was filmed. We made it to the house where Mozart was born which was a very interesting site. The place was filled with letters that he had written, his first musical instruments, and the harpsichord he wrote a couple of his pieces on. Soon it was time to turn in the bikes and Catch the train back to Munich.

May 15, 2008 - Around town

It's an off day for us, no excursions. After a walk and breakfast we went over to Bad Aussee a town about 5 minutes away for some shopping and eating and drinking. It was another beautiful day here. We treated ourselves to a fancy supper for our last night in Austria, it was a fitting end. We are off to Frankfort tomorrow and fly home on Saturday morning.

May 14, 2008 - Salzburg and the ice caves

Yesterday we went to Salzburg which is about 90 minutes or so away. It is a beautiful city and we had a fine time wandering and shopping. We also visited the Hohensalzfortress which is a castle above the city. Today we went to the Ice Caves which are about 20 minutes away near the Salt Mine we visited earlier in the week. It was pretty neat, we'll try to get some photos posted.
