May 12, 2012 - Hallstatt, Austria
13th April 2012: The time is 08:04am and we are just leaving Passau by train heading to Hallstatt. The train is smooth, comfortable and in good condition. We actually need 3 trains and a ferry ride before we get to our destination. We should arrive by at the ferry point at 11:25am. The ferry ride is across Hallstatt See (Lake). On our last train trip, we wind our way through the snow capped mountains and cold lakes of Austria with beautiful scenery all the way, punctuated only by the short stops at the many stations along the way....

Arriving in Hallstatt is quite the experience in itself. With the train station on one side of lake and the village itself on the other, you need to take a ferry across the lake to get there and are thus awarded with a spectacular first impression of this famous Alpine village. Once there, the local museum shows artifacts found in burial grounds around the area spanning the last 7000 years. A short walk to St. Michael’s chapel reveals one of the more unique objects on display in Hallstatt: hand-painted skulls – neatly arranged in the bone...

Jun 3, 2009 - Cesky Krumlov to Salzburg, via Hallstatt
We had booked a shuttle with Sebastian Tours for the drive from Cesky Krumlov to Hallstatt, Austria. The van was pretty full, so Lia sat in front with the driver, and I sat in the backseat. The drive was beautiful. I saw several farmers out in their fields turning their hay by hand, which was cool. My camera batteries died just as we were getting into the mountains, though, so not many good pictures. The border between Czech Republic and Austria was noticeable due to the appearance of Gasthauses. The drive took about 3 hours. Upon our...
