Jun 11, 2019 - Day 28 - Portschach

Day 28 - Tuesday 11 June 19 - Portschach Today we planned to explore the local area by car. At 0930hrs, we set off North for the 23km drive over the hills to Ossiach on Ossiach See ( another lake to the NNW of Worthersee). The trip was different to our previous driving experiences as the standard of the road varied considerably and could best be described as country. GeePS also did not help the situation and selected a number of questionable routes to support this belief. The countryside however was more than appealing and now feels very...

Jun 10, 2019 - Day 27 - Portschach

Day 27 - Monday 10 June 19 - Portschach There is nothing worse than having email connection problems that require access to passwords you have left at home. Several hours later with much frustration the majority of problems were solved before breakfast. While our internet connection is poor, the same can’t be said for the hotel’s breakfast. We came quite close to over indulging again before walking the 2 km to the Landspitz ferry terminal to take the 0950 hrs, 55 minute trip to Klagenfurt. The lake was calm and the air quite warm as we...

Jun 9, 2019 - Day 26 - Portschach am Worthersee

Day 26 - Sunday 9 June 19 - Portschach, Lake Worthersee I was awake at 0515 hrs for the second day straight with daylight streaming into our room. As the Internet was not working in our 4 Star room, I dressed early to complete my tasks with a coffee in the breakfast area. Kaye joined me later for breakfast. We were packed and were ready to leave soon after. Today we are driving to Portschach am Worthsee for three days of living lakeside; departing 0940 for the 132km trip. We were initially slowed by an accident involving a bicycle rider (...

Jul 14, 2018 - Goldeck Panoramastrassa

Today we drove up the Goldeck Panoramastrasse not far from Spittal. The road itself was not very panoramic but the views from the top were good. We decided walk one of the trails. It was a good walk but the weather looked threatening and by the time we got back to the car it had started to rain. When we drove back down to the valley the sun was shining !

Jul 13, 2018 - Nockalmstrasse or the Nockalm Road

It was forecast to be a lovely day so we decided we would drive the scenic Nockalmstrasse or Nockalm Road. This scenic toll road is 34km long and winds through the Nocky Mountains Biosphere Reserve. The road was originally an old iron mining road but traces of its past was not obvious. It was a stunning road with lots of fantastic views, 54 hairpin bends, and some interesting exhibition stops. As well as stopping for the views we learned about the geology and flora and fauna of the area. One exhibition was the Petrified Worlds fossils...

Jul 10, 2018 - Gmünd, Spittal and Millstätter See

Just down the road from the campground was the small village of Gmünd. This village dates back to the 11th century and has an attractive walled centre and a 13th century hilltop castle. From 1480 the Hungarians conducted a seven year siege of the castle braking through and partially destroying the castle. From Gmünd we drove the river road to Spittal an der Drau. The town was quite disappointing. It had a nice square by the Schloss Porcia which had been built between 1533-1597 but that was all. We then decided we would drive to have a...

Jul 9, 2018 - Malta Hochalmstaße

We took the valley toll road into the mountains northwest of the campground. The road is 14.4 km long and climbs from 911m to 1933m above sea level. At the end of the road is the Tallest dam/ reservoir in Austria. The road also allows access to a number of spectacular waterfalls in the Maltatal valley. Just after the toll station we stopped at the first waterfall – Meinikfall. Not only was there the waterfall but the was an interesting crevice where the water of the river had worn its way through the rock. The road had traffic lights on the...

Jul 8, 2018 - The Maltatal Valley. Waterfall Number One Goßfälle

Our campground is situated in the Maltaal Valley recognized for its many waterfalls. After our long travelling day yesterday, we decided we all needed a walk. We discovered the Goßfälle, at Kischach, just up the road from the campground. There was a steep but good path up by the side of the waterfall which in fact was a series of waterfalls all tumbling over rock which was cracked and scored. On reaching the top of the waterfall we continued along the path running by the side of the river and through the forest until it came into open...

Jul 7, 2018 - Moving to the southside of the Alps

Today we left Mondsee and headed south through the Austrian Alps into the Austrian region of Carinthia. The Austrian tolls are expensive so the journey had a bit of ouch feel on the pocket. We arrived safely at the campground in Malta, Austria and the very helpful owner showed the sites which we could choose from and then escorted us to our site through the campground. He even got his maintenance man to cut some of the trees which had too low branches. Excellent service. Our neighbours we three caravans towed by vintage tractors

Jun 11, 2018 - Grossglockner Road

Another must do in Austria is to drive the Grossglockner Road 48km of high alpine scenery. The road was originally built by an unemployed workforce(3000 men) during the Depression between 1930 and 1935 and was the first high alpine road. Today it receives more than 1.2 million visitors. The only downside to the road is the motorbikes who just want to beat up the road to say they have done it. Both the noise and their style of driving (sometimes dangerous) can be annoying. The road starts just near Bruck after you enter the Fuscher Valley....

Aug 12, 2017 - On the road again

What a day! First we slept in.....the alarm was set but not turned on...oops must have been those sleepy eyes and that foggy brain! I After a nice continental breakfast, we waited for Renault to come pick us up...and waited some more. Just after 10 Gord phoned Renault and corrected the name of our hotel...he had been waiting at the Hilton...another foggy moment?..We picked up our car on a farm--with fields filled with Citroens and Peugots. The farm has been repurposed. Then things really got interesting. To reintroduce ourselves to European...
