Aug 23, 2012 - Travelling to the Bungle Bungles

Left for our morning trip to the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park on the turn off to the national park. Quite a pleasant drive took about 31/2 hours driving through Turkey Creek which has the hotel/caravan park and helipads on one side of the road and the closed aboriginal community on the other. The community looks like it has had a massive injection of cash as all the houses look brand new. A short drive then to the turn off and a what we thought was a rough 1km drive into the caravan park on the Mabel Downs station. There is not much at the...

Aug 12, 2012 - Rumble in the Bungles

Most expensive piece of red dirt yet at the Bungles Camp ground beside the Great Northern Highway - $45 a night, but we had some fun around the camp fire with fellow travellers. Couldn’t persuade H to join me (she’d seen it all from the air 25 years ago), so I headed off to the Bungles alone for a 2 hour drive on gravel with a number of creek crossings. Words can’t really get across the feel of the place, so have a look at the photos – even they cannot show the scale of the landscape.

Jun 26, 2011 - Bungle Bungles

After 53 kms of more nasty dirt roads with 31 water/river crossing and 1 flat we reached the ranger station! We were all feeling abit car sick because of the uneven roads then we still had to drive to the gorges we wanted to see, i was ready to turn around( they don't tell you this in the brochures!!! Because it took so long we wouldn't have time to see much so we picked Echidna chasm, lovely rocky walk, but in the back of our minds John and I were worried about not having another spare, we had 1 spongy tyre and the other one had what...

Sep 6, 2010 - Halls Creek & Turkey Creek N.T.

6th September. Left Mary Pool 7am headed for Halls Creek where we stopped to buy a few things, get fuel, and stopped at the very good bakery, we had warm doughnuts for morning tea before heading on, we had planned to stay at a 24hr. Stop, but the two we stopped at weren’t that shady and it was the heat of the day and over 40c so decided we would stay at Turkey Creek (Warnum) Roadhouse CP very very average but by the time we got there we were hot and tired, about 1.30am the heavens opened and it poured for two hours without stopping.

Jul 18, 2009 - Saturday 18th July

Our day trip to the Bungle Bungles started with a pick up by East Kimberley Tours from the Turkey Creek roadhouse at 5.30am. Straight away I'm out of my comfort zone. Our bus was actually a 4 tonne truck with a bus body on the back, but still very comfortable, a nice small group of 12 passengers. 53 kms down the Gt Nth Hwy to the turn off into Purnululu National Park and the Bungle Bungle mountain range. Another 53 kms to the visitors centre at he edge of the mountains. 53kms of torture, I don't think I've ever been on a worse road. A...

Jul 17, 2009 - Friday 17th July

I don't want to prattle on about the cold nights up here but last night Terri left the water in the sink and this morning it was frozen, not thick but a willy wag tail could have skated on it. Despite that Terri still got up early and walked along the river bed with her video camera, rugged up with coat and beanie....weird really because about 2 hours after sunrise it's about 25c. This next paragraph is required reading for anyone who drives a car....pretty much everyone. The last thing we do every night before going to bed is lock the...

Apr 15, 2007 - Trip to the Bungle Bungles Western Australia 4 April 2007

Sylvia's Comments We were up early for a helicopter flight over the Purnululu National Park home of the famous Bungle Bungles. The park remains closed due to the recent rain so the only way we were going to see this magnificent area was from above. We were a little disappointed as we would like to have done a 4 wheel drive tour to get into the gorges but this was the next best thing. Our pilot Rob met us at the Helliworks office by the road house and asked if we would mind Brad joining us for the trip. He is new to the company and learning...

Jul 5, 2005 - Bungle Bungles

I'm back ... and in desperate need of a shower! Our adventure trip to the Purnululu Nationalpark, aka "Bungle Bungles" was great! Six people and one Nissan Patrol four wheel drive, rough dirt tracks and the tiger-striped rocks were a truly good combination. We left Kununura Saturday evening at about 6 to spend another free night next to the highway. The next morning we got up at half past five and went to the National Park (200 km highway and 50 km Dirtroad). In the next three days we did about every walk there, from Echidna Chasm, a gorge...
