Aug 18, 2010 - Back to the Wild - Dampier Peninsula

We were after some culture, some Aboriginal culture. Port Smith had given us a small taste of the beauty of the Aboriginal way, and we knew that we needed to take ourselves to somewhere more remote to find more of the real deal. After stocking up on all our supplies in Broome, and making sure the car and trailer were tuned up and ready for a hammering, we headed to the wild Dampier Peninsula. The road was tough, and I mean tough. With corrugations that would shake your teeth out, it was the only way into the peninsula and the only way out....

Jun 24, 2010 - Lombadina - a special place

As we raced from the eastern to the western side of the peninsular towards Lombadina our hopes of seeing the sunset quickly faded and we found ourselves driving into the Aboriginal Community right on dark. The office on the right as we entered looked promising but then was clearly shut meaning we had no way of getting to our room for the night. Fortunately a sign posted on the board outside had our names on it and after some touring (accidentally) around the village we found ourselves at our room for the night in this mysterious and unusual...

Jun 24, 2010 - The Horizontal Waterfalls

Our morning at Lombadina was really just a precurser to the big event of the day - nay, the whole trip - the big tour to the Horizontal Waterfalls. This was an idea conceived from a picture showing the falls between high cliffs with rapidly flowing water squeezing through. It was remote, it was exciting, it was a unique natural phenomenon unlike anything else in the world - in short, I had to be there. At one point I didn't think we were going to make it. You see, for this to happen required a very big factor to work - babysitters. No kids...
