Jan 19, 2009 - Carnavon

Jun 3, 2008 - Roadtrip 2nd leg

Well last night's campsite was lovely. I would recommend it to anyone - it's Batavia, just outside Geraldton. We left just after 10am and went back into Geraldton to get some more food. After that we headed North. We saw a few eagles and stopped in a very pretty picnic area on the Murchison River. There were lots of flowers and, unfortunately, quite a lot of annoying flies, some of which got inside and continued on our journey with us. We had a few other stops and unfortunately had to find our campsite in the dark again. Particularly bad...

Apr 24, 2008 - On the Road

Lesson 1 Don’t book for more than one night if you aren’t sure of the destination Lesson 2 Don’t use the bulk delete button on the digital camera (lost the first days photos DOH !!!) Lesson 3 Don’t buy Roadhouse food After a casual breakfast we went for a walk down to the Stromatilites via the Shell Block Quarry, quiet an interesting place with plenty of informative signs detailing the areas past and natural peculiarities. Made a big effort to explain it all to the kids, very educational stuff those living fossils, when asked later what...

J.C.'S BIG ADVENTURE

Apr 20, 2007 - So who's going to give her the bad news?

We've been deliberating for months....will we take her or will she stay at home? And finally the jury has handed down its verdict. Home it will be for Soot. She who is five parts fish is going to miss a 4-month watery adventure. One of us is going to have to break the bad news to her. Soot, her claim to fame being the dog in Carnarvon who leads the most adventurous life, is not going to be too happy about it. However, it would be cruel to take her. We cannot guarantee being able to take her ashore every day (she has been known to keep all...

Oct 31, 2006 - Monkey Mia dolphins, and various other places

We do apologise for the lack of photos - we're going to try and upload some tomorrow, but are quite tired tonight, so just thought we'd do the writing bit. Very very busy day, but very very good too! The day got off to a fantastic start with the dolphins at Monkey Mia. We all stood in the water, and the dolphins appeared and were swimming around right in front of us - I mean a couple of metres away! The rangers came out and did a little talk about the dolphins and the programme that they're running at Monkey Mia, and then they fed the...

Jul 15, 2006 - Carnarvon

Saturday 15th July 2006 Carnarvon We left the campsite early and got to Ocean World, a marine animal park by 9am. Unfortunately they did not open until 10am, so we decided rather than wait an hour we would get going. We stopped on the way out at Shell Beach. This is, as its name suggests a beach made up of shells. This may not sound that remarkable, but all the shells are the same tiny white shell which is found here because the saltiness of the water means that the fish which would normally feed on them do not come into the area. The...

Van rolling to Oz

Mar 17, 2006 - WA: Monkey Mia to Carnarvon to watch the 'Tahs

Up early at Trish and Wayne's to check wind & head to Monkey Mia to see if the conditions are good enough for a lesson. The windy is a finicky mistress - she only turns up when she's not wanted. Stu and Wayne try valiantly to make it work, but no go, so we head off. Shell Beach is as the name suggests - no sand just bleached white cockle shells, metres deep and as far as the eye can see, make up the beach and the water is crystal blue and so salty that it's easy to float around in the calm waters. The flies necessitate the bad beekeeper...

Nixes On Tour

Jun 7, 2005 - Going North

We are on the road again, finally. We did a fair bit of sightseeing during the last days and quite a lot of kilometers on the Highway. The first stop after Perth was Cervantes, close to the Pinnacles which we vistited the following morning. The Pinnacles are hundreds of limestone pillars up to 4m high standing in the middle of the desert. They create a quite surreal looking landscape, really cool! After that we left Australia for about an hour when we visited the "Hutt River Province". In 1970 one of the farmers was not too happy with the...

Jul 8, 2004 - The road to Perth

Australia is an immense coutry. It's about a couple of thousand kilometres from Broome to Perth. A two or three day drive, driving all day, sleeping at night (due to risk of serious damage to the car from Roos). So it wasn't just a quick cruise down the road, from Leeds to London for example (and even that's a monster drive in UK terms!) The other thing about it is there is only one service station every 400 kms, or basically one per tank of petrol. So when you find one, you have to fill up, simple as that. And they know it, the bastards!...
