Dec 13, 2015 - Cowes

The weather hasn't been great for the last few days, starting with a gale warning along this coast on Friday. It's improved since then & even got to the mid-20s today. I haven't done anything exciting except continue to explore Phillip Island & do some nice beach walks. Ready to move on tomorrow, along the Great Ocean Road to Lorne.

Dec 10, 2015 - Cowes

This afternoon I used the 3rd part of my penguin ticket & went to Churchill Island, a very small island which has been joined to Phillip Island by a bridge since the 1960s. It’s promoted as a Heritage Farm with all kinds of animal activities for the kids but I found the history of the island fascinating. The first European contact was in 1801 when Lt James Grant landed here in the Lady Nelson. He noticed the rich soil & strong growth of the trees so he had his men clear a patch of ground, till the soil & plant some wheat given to him by a...

Dec 9, 2015 - Cowes

Went to the Penguin Parade this evening. I got there about 8:00 & saw on the board that the penguins started coming in at 8:50 last night so I had plenty of time. I’d spent a bit of extra money for a pass to the underground observatory area but found out you couldn’t see them coming up the beach from there so, on the advice of a very friendly young ranger, I sat in the general admission stand until I’d seen enough of the beach, then came back to the underground area. That worked out very well. There were lots of people around (mostly...

The Phillip Island koala colony is almost as well-known as the penguins although cars, disease & dogs has pretty much wiped out the wild population. I had free entry to the Koala Conservation Centre as part of my penguin ticket & it was well worth the visit. They’ve built tree-top boardwalks which are wonderful because (a) you’re at the same level as the koalas so you get to see more than their furry bottoms, (b) you don’t have to walk around craning your neck & (c) it reduces the likelihood of being showered with piddle.

Dec 7, 2015 - Yarram to Cowes (Phillip Island)

Moving day. It was still chilly in Yarram (18 when I left at 9:30), a bit different from the 44ºC they’ve been having in Mildura for the last few days. Somewhere in between would be good. It was about 150 km to Phillip Island & I had no trouble parking or setting up in a nice spot overlooking the beach but a bit sheltered if any wind comes along. After lunch, I went for a drive around town, did some grocery shopping then went to the penguin area to get information about various ticket options & which would be the best night. Settled on...

Nov 17, 2013 - Penguins, penguins, penguins.....

We had a beautiful drive along the Tasman Sea leaving Apollo Bay. We stopped a few times for pictures at lookouts and enjoyed the cute little summer resort towns along the way. At noon the three of us (Dave, Marilyn and the rental car) took the Queenscliff to Sorrento ferry to avoid the long drive up and over Port Phillip Bay and through metropolitan Melbourne. From there we took about two hours to drive north, then east, then south and finally west to Phillip Island. We were on Phillip Island to experience the "most popular wildlife...

Dec 25, 2012 - Phillip Island, Cowes

Sep 11, 2009 - Cowes and the Little Penguins

Phillip Island, Cowes and the Little Penguins. Thursday 10th September After a long drive we elect to stay at a campsite that advertises a Pool, spa and TV room with a wood burning stove! They tell us that they only have ‘en-suite’ sites available as the toilet block is being refurbished – but at $30 that is good by us! For those of you who don’t know what an ‘en-suite’ site is – well – imagine a little shed next to your caravan, with a toilet, basin and shower inside – and your own key!! – That’s it! This was a nice modern one, which we...

Jan 16, 2009 - My holidays - Phillip Island.

My life in Noosa!

Dec 5, 2008 - Phillip Island

Now in Cowes, on Phillip Island. Travelled nearly 1000 miles in 2 days from Canberra, and inland through Victoria, to Phillip Island, just to the east of Melbourne. not done much, went to visit a few beaches, no surf but lovely scenery especially on the coast around seal rock, home to a colony of many a seal surprisingly. went and visited the Phillip Island race circuit, where the motogp race is held. in the evening, got to see lots of little penguins (yes that is their proper name) at dusk from the sea, as they walk up the beach to their...
