Nov 26, 2016 - Streaky Bay

After doing a load of washing I drove into the centre of town to have a look at the shops. It didn’t take long as there aren’t that many but they have a really good bakery (I think it might be the best we’ve come across so far). We had pasties for lunch yesterday- they actually have 5 different varieties! I bought bread rolls today to have for lunch on our sight seeing drive which is where we went almost as soon as I got back to camp. Our trip today was about 50k along the coast to Point Labatt to see the sea lion colony that is there. It...

Nov 25, 2016 - Smoky Bay to Streaky Bay

We only drove about 70k today, so were packed up and set up again by lunch time. The caravan park here is right on the water. Like Smoky Bay, Sreaky Bay is on the Great Australian Bight, but the bays are quite sheltered and very shallow. I think you could walk a kilometre out to sea just here and the water would not even be up to your waist! Also like Smoky Bay, the land is very brown and there is very little grass to be seen anywhere. (A bit like in most places in WA - having any sort of lawn is a luxury). They grow wheat and barley around...

2016 holiday

Nov 16, 2015 - Monday Nov 16th, Esperance

Monday Nov 16th, Esperance For the benefit of my non golfing readers….a bit about the Nullabor golf links. This golf course runs from Kalgoorlie to Ceduna, over 1100kms long and is the longest golf course in the world. Incorporating existing holes from the Kalgoorlie club, Kambalda , Norseman and Ceduna they built a hole at every roadhouse across the Nullabor plus the one at the Frazer range caravan park to make a very unique 18 hole golf course. The holes have names instead of numbers so it can be played starting from either end. It has,...

Nov 15, 2015 - Sunday Nov 15th, Frazer Range

Sunday Nov 15th One thing about sleeping 250kms from the SA/WA border is the sun comes up REALLY early. Broad daylight before 4am….because “over there” it’s 6.30. Tried to sleep a bit more but impossible. Beautiful cool morning, plenty of time for a leisurely breakfast and still got away by 7.30. A quick stop at Cockle3biddy just to send off yesterdays blog because there was phone signal there. There’s still a lot of this country without mobile phone reception, but I have to say over east thru’ NSW and QLD it was much better than 2008, and...

Nov 14, 2015 - Saturday Nov 14th, Cocklebiddy

Saturday Nov 14th….WA bound Back to the chilly nights, had to rug up last night and when we left our camp at 8.30am it was only 12 degrees. I think we were just a tad unlucky with the heat wave we copped coming thru the centre, looks like Alice has cooled down a bit, down to low 30’s. Luck of the draw. Heading west, nice tail wind blowing us home…the border is about 3 hours away. Stopped at Nullabor roadhouse for a coffee, one of the better roadhouses coming across the country, clean and spick and span….and friendly people. Border Village...

Nov 13, 2015 - Friday Nov 13th, Yalata

Friday Nov 13th..heading west Yep….caravan parks are nice, most have excellent amenities and Streaky Bay is no exception. Even the dirt sites are actually a crushed gravel so not a problem with dust. This park has top class amenities ….but….there’s always a downside to caravan parks….such as the neighbour who wanders out at dawn to proceed with his morning ritual of copious phlegmy hawking. Sort of puts you off your breakfast a bit. We REALLY slept in today, didn’t get away until 9.20. Before breakfast Terri went for a long jog to the jetty...

Nov 12, 2015 - Thursday Nov 12th...Streaky Bay

Thursday Nov 12th..Streaky Bay Another big thunderstorm early this morning, plenty of cracks and rumbles but not a lot of rain . A pleasant interlude to the trucks flying past. We’re actually camped on the Eyre Hwy so all east/west traffic is going right past our doorstep. There’s 3 other vans in this little spot, one old codger travelling alone came over for a chat late yesterday, he’s free-camped all the way from Brisbane to Bunbury and back to here, he couldn’t go any further today , he’s waiting for his pension so he can buy more fuel....

Aug 3, 2015 - At Streaky Bay

Monday 3 August 2015 Woke to a drizzly warmer morning. The showers don't last for long, followed by blue sky and sunshine. Overall we have had good weather here, and enjoyed the couple of days of R & R. Headed to town along the beach walkway then a cold and windy walk on the jetty followed by a visit to the local bakery where Dot & Gary caught up with us after Dot sorted her washing. A visit to the Information Centre was very profitable, with hints for the next couple of days across the Nullabor and a tip to visit Cape Bauer later in the...

Aug 2, 2015 - At Streaky Bay

Sunday 2 August 2015 A very relaxing day in Streaky Bay. Had a nice sleep in, leisurely breakfast, and then we all caught up on our washing. The bad weather that had been predicted did not eventuate, and it has been a very nice day. The cold breeze is still with us, but a protected spot in the sun has been very easy to take. Managed to catch up on a few necessities at the supermarket after lunch, and then had an exploring walk along the foreshore. The water in the bay is so blue. Found a path we can explore tomorrow with a walk to town and...

Aug 1, 2015 - Wilmington to Streaky Bay

Saturday 1 August 2015 Left our lovely little Bush Camp early to make our way to Streaky Bay. Nice mild clear morning, but the forecast of showers did not disappoint us. It got bleaker and colder the further we travelled, and by the time we stepped out the car at Streaky Bay, we all froze. It was a very pleasant drive, and the first part before Port Augusta was very scenic. The landscape changed from scenic, to very dry, to rich farming areas and green fields of new wheat. Due to rain in the area, we continued on to Kimba for our first and...

Andy & Lote went into Streaky Bay for a drive and I took the dogs for a walk along the beach. We have decided to move if we can up to the car park as soon as someone leaves luck was on my side as I found a couple leaving tomorrow and the next day the couple next door to them are leaving. 9/3 Peter went out again he was coming in early so we move up to the car...
