Oct 19, 2015 - Monday Oct 19th, Cowell

Monday Oct 19th Cowell A balmy night, almost tropical, but some breeze most of the night kept us comfortable. A small campervan arrived just after us and later in the night another C/T….bloody crowded. We were woken up at dawn by a cacophony from the plethora of bush birds in the trees above us. A sweet sound for some, a nice alarm clock for us. Still quite warm, a quick breakfast, then a few big raindrops coming down, so packed in a hurry….I don’t like folding the C/T when it’s wet. Managed the whole process in under 5 minutes. Out on the...

Left Brighton Beach headed for Cowell via Port Augusta on Sunday morning. We were going to stay 2 nights at Port Augusta, but the caravan park had NOT ONE blade of grass within the fences and the wind blowing in raised dust and it's all through the van and car. All lock-up overnight, thieves, vandals and hoons abound there evidently. We rang ahead to Cowell to see if we could get in a day early(and they said we could) and left like mongrel dogs this morning (without a refund - happy to tear up $30 just to get out of there). Cowell looks...

We had a couple of nights here in Cowel, gorgeous little town, but serious grey nomad fisherman territory with all the 4wd's setting off at 6am every morning, boats in tow, right past our door! We caught one blue swimmer crab off the jetty, we were pretty excited and the 3 mouthfuls of crab meat we each got once we cooked it were delicious!!

Saturday 14th November Lorraine: Today we bid farewell to the coast and the Great Southern Ocean for a bit and headed north to the gold mining town of Kalgoorlie. Back in 1893, long time gold prospector and Irishman Paddy Hannan left the town of Coolgardie with his horse, heading west in search of more gold. His horse needed to be re-shod en-route and whilst this work was being done, lucky ol’ Paddy managed to kick up some dirt with his shoe and uncovered a large nugget of gold and in doing so sparked a massive gold rush to Western...

Arrived Whyalla keeping a lookout for the big ship, the largest land locked ship in Australia we're told. Didn't have to look far, you almost run into it as you drive into Whyalla from the north. As we walked into the little visitors centre at the front we were advised that the ship guided tour was starting in one minute....nice timing eh? Very interesting tour of this old Navy ship, the 1st built in Whyalla around 1941. Almost complete and apparently a story in itself as to how they got it 2km inland from the port. Behind the ship is an...
