Nov 21, 2009 - Day out in Adelaide City

Yesterday David and Elizabeth took me for a drive along the coast of Adelaide, to see some of the beaches. ... Today I went out with Tim and Stephanie who took me to Adelaide City, where we walked along the river for a bit and around the main streets, stopping at a chocolate shop along the way- it was a new experience, because the chocolate would melt if you took it outside, the shop looks like a little cafe and you buy your chocolates and get them on a little tray and sit and eat them there. ... We went and had a quick look in the Adelaide Art Gallery to have a look at the art by Australians, and most were very easy to spot as they tended to contain a lot of red! The city of Adelaide is completely surrounded by parklands, some of which are just grassy parks(although due to the hot weather most of the grass is dead) and some of which are gardens, ranging from rose gardens to the japanese garden, which we visited today. ... Then we went and visited a viewpoint above Adelaide, where there was a very excited dog and a spectacular view over the city all the way to the ocean. ...

They schlepped whatever needed schlepping from Darwin in the north or from Adelaide in the south into the middle of the continent. ... We are now 22 hours into our grueling trek on this train known as The Ghan which, for the past 80 years, has travelled from Adelaide to Alice Springs and, for the past 5 years, has continued on to Darwin – 3 days and nights and about 3,000 km. ... We have just passed the Iron Man monument which honours the laying of railroad tie number 1,000,000 on the way north from Adelaide. ... How is a person supposed to live like that! Humans – 1 Kenneth (the iPhone GPS, remember?) – 0 Apparently, Kenneth had a hard time accepting that the M2 Freeway was closed (for repairs? for a kangaroo convention crossing? who knows? But it was closed down shut). ... Maybe that’s just me talking, but we all agreed that we were sated and so I put Kenneth on auto-pilot and fell into a wine stupor induced coma while he drove us back into Adelaide. ... The end of the Great Ocean Road is Adelaide, and to be honest its a bit of a disappointment, there's nopthing to see here apart from the obligatory Botanical garden which seems to be in every Australian city. ...
