Feb 17, 2013 - In and out of Yeppoon

Left Hervey Bay today for a one night stopover in Yeppoon. Jay couldn't we hadn't been to Frazer Island and said there was no point staying at Hervey Bay if you weren't going to the Island. He had a point. We had a five hour drive to Yeppoon, it rained. On arrival we were pleasantly surprised as it was quite a nice sea side town with a lovely beach. The sea though, was a brown muddy colour. Speaking to a local lady she said it usually is a lovely blue, but due to the floods and the poor weather is was quite awful at the moment. In...

Nov 27, 2012 - Goodbye Yeppoon

Before we left Yeppoon, Charlie's friend from Winnipeg - Harry - came to our place for a weekend of golf and some beach time. At the GO FAR walking group we had cake for the birthdays . It was hard to stretch the small cake to serve 30 people which was the most ever at a walk I think. The walking group had a Christmas wind up and Santa made a surprise appearance.

Oct 3, 2012 - Here and there

We visited several interesting places in the Yeppoon area. First was a tour of a Tea Tree plantation at Byfield which is just 30 minutes north of our house. Tea trees are native to this area. They do not grow naturally anywhere outside of Australia. Tea tree oil has many medicinal properties especially for skin problems. It is named Tea tree because Captain Cook made tea from the plant when he discovered Australia in 1770. Claudie is from Quebec. She & her Aussie husband have owned this property for 12 years. We started with morning tea...

Sep 27, 2012 - Day in Yeppoon

Today we went for a drive around Yeppoon and finished off having a beer down at the marina. Joshie loved being in amongst the big boats. We were even lucky enough to see a few boxed jellyfish. Back to the caravan park and we get talking to the couple next door. The lads hit it off and are up nattering til 12. It's finally neat that marc meet someone to have a random beer with as u can tell he misses that.

Sep 26, 2012 - 1770 to Yeppoon via Gladstone

This morning we headed up to the point before leaving the town of 1770. The point signifies were Captain Cook first landed. Next stop Gladstone to see what construction work is around. Gladstone is a lot nicer than we think and shows a lot of promise for consistent work in the future. We head on to rockhampton and I arrive to be a little disappointed, For some reason I have visialised rocky to be coastal and nice beaches etc shows how i dont recall it from our trip in the 80's but its actually old and rundown. Lucky for us campers told us...

Sep 14, 2012 - Airlie Beach to Yeppoon

So an airport is situated behind our campsite - that wasnt advertised - along with the early risers(grey nomads)whizbangs, golfcarts roaring around with bins attached and Bridget waking early there was no chance of a sleep in! We hit the road and within a very short distance - ROADWORKS!!! Aaaggghhh!!! Queensland is the roadwork state! The longest travelled today without roadworks was 80kms! So a 500km trip took 7hrs! Bruce Highway is a very busy road with impatient drivers, trucks on a mission, frustrated locals and slow caravaners.....not...

Jul 23, 2012 - Yeppoon

Got into Yeppoon just in time to set up just before dark. Right down the back with a 100ft extension lead to give us power. Very helpful people. We are here for 2 nights at the moment. Tonight I have taken the last of my course of antibiotics for the nasty dose of bronchitis and sinusitis I have had. Di is still laying down. Hot water bottle placed strategically over the part that hurts. Will try and get the car serviced tomorrow and then it will be time start for home.

Jul 14, 2012 - A day in the life

I thought I would try to give you a feel for what it is like living here, some of the little everyday things. The mail is delivered by a guy on a scooter, he drives right up to the mailbox, even driving on your grass if he has to - he never gets off the scooter. Electricity is very expensive here. There are lots of incentives to get solar systems for hot water & general use. Most people dry their clothes outside if possible but dryers are common too. They are mounted high up on the wall above the washers and they vent to the inside so the...

Jul 14, 2012 - Roo hunting

We went out looking for kangaroos and we got lucky!! I saw my first kangaroos up close & personal. An adult and a young one on the golf course at the Capricorn Resort. They were not at all afraid of us and we probably could have gotten closer but were not sure what they might do. The resort has 2 beautiful golf courses but the day we were there the only ones on the course were the roos. They are lucky - they don't need a pull cart, they have a built in carry bag. Also saw lots of birds, even 2 huge stork like birds called Brogia. The...

Jul 13, 2012 - Where has all the sunshine gone?

The weather has been absolutely awful! For 3 days it was supper windy, not gentle ocean breezes, rather blow you away winds. The house would even shudder with the really strong gusts. Everyone says this is VERY unusual, it is supposed to be non stop clear blue skies and mid twenty temps. Now a whole week of drizzly rain and fog, can't even see the shore this morning. The towels don't dry from one morning to the next. This is supposed to be the DRY season. We bought a set top box for the TV so now we can record some TV that is on later at...

Jul 4, 2012 - Loving it

We have seen dolphins swimming not far from shore 2 days in a row. There are lots of little coffee shops / bakeries along the main street in Yeppoon. They all have a few tables outside on the sidewalk. It is impossible to find cinnamon buns here - I will have to make my own. On the up side, they make nice scones with jam & Devonshire cream - yum!. It is starting to feel a little more like home now, the pantry is getting stocked and I can find my way around. I went to town on the bus and found out about a seniors group (am I really in that...
